#Needlework : Second attempt at tapestry crochet - steem on !

in #needlework6 years ago

This is my last post in the hat series (for now) as I do not want to be ‘typecast’ :D

I would like to thank you so much for your kind words of encouragement. I normally just make things and often nobody really cares, but you have been a great audience. Thank you.

You might recall that I wanted to improve on my crochet tapestry technique so I decided to give it another go.

My original attempt was done on a flat piece and resulted in a rectangle.

On this occasion I used a very reduced chart of the steemit logo to make a hat crocheted in the round from the bottom rim up. Just in case, I got the chart from this wonderful site. When I uploaded the chart I was able to determine the number of stitches I needed, 14 (ie half of 28), but the programme (?) doesn’t let you determine the number of rows.

I therefore had 5 more rows than needed normally for a knitted hat. This worried me a bit but I really wanted to put a logo on a mini hat so I went on with my experiment regardless.

Because it was done in the round without turning, there was, therefore, ‘no wrong side' to complicate chart reading or yarn floats. Here's the general process:

1 - I crocheted a chain of 28 stitches. In my original knitted hat the pattern I found specified 31 stitches, but then the one I was sent as a pdf by the charity said 28 so I stuck to that instead.
2 - I carefully joined with a slip stitch to make a ring. This looked similar in diameter to the beginning of a knitted hat.
3 - After crocheting a first row of single crochet all the way around I decided not to have a specific point to join, but to use a spiral. I do not normally do this, but it was another experiment.
4 - This photo shows you the very first stitch in blue and it looked so neat.
5 - and 6 plus the main photo of the collage just show you different takes of the same process.

The rest of the process is similar to the other hats.

The wrong side of the hat looks surprising neat after sewing in all the loose ends - I didn’t use glue to avoid accidents.

Incidentally I actually had goosebumps throughout this experiment because the crochet hook and the yarn made an annoying little squeak. I will try another crochet hook as that was quite unnerving.

My personal favourite illustrates the insecurity of the ‘design process’. At that point it was clear to me the the final length of the hat was going to be longer than that of a knitted hat and so I was wondering what it was going to look like. I decided to actually skip one line of the design and I don’t think it makes that much difference as the logo design lost so much of its shape when shrunk to that number of stitches.

Below is what hats should be like :

@phoenixwren asked what actually happens to the hats. They are actually used as the photo above shows in shops and supermarkets. The idea is that people will buy them because the product looks more attractive than usual and apparently 25p goes to the Age charity.

Thank you for reading !

sweet... another googly steemie... though I think the eyes actually worked better on the three steemies on that spectangular square you posted before :D

Thank you, @googlyeyes. I agree that the others worked better, but in that last photo I quite liked seeing what that googly eye 'was made of' - the texture and how the light hit it :D

Say it ain't so... no more googlyeyes?

Oh, no worries about that... I meant the 'mini hats' really - I will make more of course as part of that charity drive and If I come with something interesting I will post about it, @steven-patrick :D

So cool @cryptocariad :) Isn't it fun with googlyeyes? Hehe.. The hats certainly look really cute with them. I don't think we can go on without adding googlyeyes to our future projects now! How cute they become. Can't imagine without them now haha.

I went to visit @tinygalaxy today and really regretted not taking some googly eyes like on a tour :D. As you say they're the perfect condiment to our creations, @marblely.

How cute is that!? I really like that! Who would have thought to use the logo like this? Just a true artist ;)

Thank you, @delishtreats. Although the process was a bit challenging I enjoyed making the mini hat for a good cause :D
