Buffalo, Livestock Associated with Meulabouh Local Wisdom (Animal, Nature and Human in Harmony)

Buffalo is my concern in the western region of Aceh, why?
Here I see free buffalo grazing in the wild in a group, without any disturbing, when the buffalo afternoon will soak in the river, the evening, buffalo-buffalo here will go home alone to the cage, without in the sleigh by the owner.

Buffalo or "keubeu" in Acehnese language as its nature is the original cattle hot and humid regions especially the northern tropical hemisphere. Cultivated by the people of western Aceh, hereinafter referred to as 'Meulabouh' living in the lowlands, such as Pante Cereumen sub-district in West Aceh, in Mukim Langoe, Canggee, Lawet, Tambang and Sikundo villages.

Because buffalo farming business has been in Meulabouh for a long time. So the way of maintenance and cultivation of buffalo farms in Meulabouh became very distinctive. Stick with the culture and local wisdom in Meulabouh, so the buffalo maintenance business has its own uniqueness.

In Meulabouh the buffalo is only housed in a cage that in Aceh is called "Weu". The title "Weu", can accommodate up to 50 to a hundred buffalo.

Every morning, the buffaloes are released to graze in the pasture. But no shepherd watched him. The buffaloes are feeding themselves, and in the afternoon before the maghrib the buffalo will return to "Weu" for the night.

I see the buffalo farm business in Meulabouh rely heavily on nature's good, by itself the buffalo owners there are very concerned with the preservation of nature. The Meulabouh people will not poison the fish in the tributaries that are in the "padang meurabee" area, not carelessly cutting down trees let alone burning the forest.

Buffalo is a very salt-loving animal. That's why after Maghrib prayer, if we stop at "weu" in Meulabouh. We will see the buffalo owners, usually along with their children, giving salt to the new buffalo who have just returned home. The buffalos immediately lick the salt from the hands of the owner. The buffalo breeders in Meulabouh believe, always with salt. The buffaloes will always remember coming home, after a day of feeding in the meadow.

Very different from the people of Aceh on the east coast, which is very close to the ox. And, to have a wedding party in Meulabouh will slaughter the buffalo for cooking, as well as on the day of "meugang".
