Heard Museum Nature Preserve Part 2

in #nature7 years ago (edited)

Welcome to Part 2 about the Heard Science Museum and Wildlife Sanctuary!

That's the official name for The Heard which has a total of 289 acres.
It really is an amazing piece of property.
It has several different habitats located on the property.
It has 40 acres of Blackland Prairie, 50 acres of wetland, bottomland forest, upland forest and white rock escarpment.
Each habitat is unique and offers a variety of plants and animals that live in the specific environments.

During our hike I took photos of the oldest trees on the property.
The Bur Oak and Sycamore trees are so tall, I couldn't even get the entire trees in one photo!
In addition, they are located on hiking trails in the forest area, so you can only get so much of the tree in a photo!

This first tree is a Bur Oak that is well over 250 years old according to the information provided.. They refer to it as a Forest Giant. It's acorns provide food for squirrels and other animals. It's bark and branches provides homes to birds and insects. Most of the trees were logged years ago, so this tree is to be treasured!

The next few photos are of the Sycamore Tree that is over 150 years old! My husband is in the photo and he's 6'5" for reference to how tall this tree is!

This tree is called a Bois D'Arc. It's a very hard wood and takes a long time to rot and it was used by American Indians and Pioneers.

That's just a highlight of some trees on the property. This last one is obviously a large old tree lying along the trail.

I hope you have a blessed day and can get out and explore some nature or just breathe in some fresh air!

I love the towering sycamores. And you can never go wrong if there is a butterfly in the midst. I think butterflies for me are a kindred spirit. They always make me smile. These pics seem to show that it was a beautiful day.

Yes, kindred spirit might be a good way to think of butterflies. Yes, it was a lovely and cooler day for Texas at least!

@violetmed, you really did a wonderful post on these magnificent trees. Can you image how much they have seen in all the years they have been growing. I can't even image what it was like 250 years ago. The Heard Natural Science Museum and Wildlife Sanctuary is an amazing place to visit. Thank-you for sharing your wonderful day there!!!

It's very interesting to think what tales these trees could tell us, if they could speak! I really don't have the time to post these long posts, but it is fun to do it! Basically, I skip cleaning some of my house! :) Thanks for coming by! Have a great Thursday @cabbagepatch!

Thank you @violetmed I loved seeing the beautiful trees.
