garden of the gods and steemit meetup

in #nature7 years ago

A week (or two) back I went down to Colorado Springs, with @in2itiveart as a traveling companion, for one of the infamous Rocky Mtn Steemit meetups.

Because I am a procrastinator (and because traffic was a bit horrid), we wound up arriving at Garden of the Gods around 5pm, just in time to catch a few photos and the sun setting over a gorgeous landscape.

For those of you who have never heard of Garden of the Gods, its an absolutely free 1364 acre park nestled in the foothills of Colorado Springs.

The park, which is a registered National Natural Landmark, is renowned for its unusual geologic features of standing rocks formed from ancient sedimentary beds of red and white sandstones and limestone.

The Park has a Visitor and Nature Center which offers thirty educational exhibits and information about the history, nature and geology of the area.

A road loops around the primary rock formations, with numerous parking areas where visitors might stop to walk along paved paths in order to access the various formations. There are at least 15 miles of dirt trails suitable for hiking, climbing, biking and horseback riding, which are popular with the millions of people who visit the park each year.

However my favorite preoccupation is taking ridiculously amateur photos and enjoying the enchanting views, which the area has an abundance of.

After circling the park, @in2itiveart directed me towards Manitou Springs, a quaint hippie town nearby. It was dusk as we passed through, so not much was seen, but I saw enough to know that I would love a whole day with camera to go back to visit. I'm hoping for a potential meetup in the next few weeks!

Next we drove to our final destination, The Burrowing Owl Lounge, which has been splendidly documented by several Steemians (and poorly documented by me, see below). I would just like to say that the vegetarian Sasquatchos (serious nachos with sloppy joe, slaw and chilis) was scary good yum food.

Our group of a dozen Rocky Mountain Steemians hung out to discuss economics, crypto and the trials of blogging, ate vegetarian nosh and tasted the strange microbrews, then ventured outside for a bit of sploof and moon magic.

One of our members, rebele93, is into astronomy and had put together a home made telescope. We got to see the moon up close and I learned about what all those shadows and bright spots indicated. Fun was had by all!

outstanding location ! thanks for sharing

thanks! appreciate you taking time to look :)

Sounds just like the kind of place I'd like to visit. I wonder why I've never heard of it before?

it's not a huge place, more of a local park, for all its beauty. great if you're ever passing thru CO.

I was at GotG in 1976 and it remains one of the best memories of all my travels around the world. Ive been in nearly all the US states, and seen most of our national parks, and such, but Garden of the Gods is well, it's named right, that is for sure. We climbed one of the tallest formations in the park, whose name I don't recall, but it was awesome. I will never forget it. Seeing the pics was really nice. Glad the meetup went well for ya too!

twas lovely, and so close but so far. dont care for colo springs but i might consider moving there just to be close by... but then i find a lovely photo almost anywhere! :)

Thats a pretty tough place to beat. I've also illegally climbed the towering formation at Red Rocks Amphitheater Park, make that trip too, totally worth it. I did that in my 20s and we got halfway up, found a cave, met some dudes climbing down, smoked with them, and then finished the climb. Cause that's how colorado rolls.

Love our meet-ups, and looking forward to the next one!

yeshhhhh!!! i am ready for some special food :)
