Day 56

he one formerly known as the most advanced tadpole (MAT) is now the largest froglet. I had forgotten just how fast these little guys grow, particularly in these early stages. The largest froglet is growing rapidly to the point the next largest is the size it was yesterday. The next largest froglet has finally begun eating today. The 5 ml pipette still seems to be the best feeding option for now while they're still trying in such early stages of growth.

They are still try to work out how to properly pick up food from the bottom of the tank, however. It's interesting to watch how quickly they figured where the food was coming from. By the end of the first feeding, they were trying to bite the pipette, they even have been trying to time the food as it falls to the bottom and strike at it. Occasionally they even manage to catch the food! Not bad for less than a day of experience.

One other benefit to the pipette is the lack of water fouling due to decomposing food. The water was only at 0.25 ppm ammonia today, despite there only being 2.5 gallons of water in the tank. Tomorrow I'll be adding another 0.5 to 1.5 gallons frog the main tank depending on the ammonia levels, as well as one of the suctions cup leafs that attach to the side of the tank and give them a place to rest at the surface, I'll do this until the tank reaches 4 gallons and then follow more normal water changes, rather than just adding water. One thing that's noticeable is that the froglets are still mostly transparent, it makes for an interesting view, though you have to look close considering how tiny they are.

The results of the ammonia test from the tadpole tank were less than encouraging as far as using the formula goes. Despite adding in a little bit more than recommended and doing a 50% water change, the ammonia level remained stuck between 0.5 and 1 ppm. Therefore, I've decided to go back to my old method of just filling the aquarium bag and stilling the zeolite. Always make sure to rinse the zeolite thoroughly, especially in the tadpoles' tank since they're filter feeders, otherwise your entire tank is going to look like you just threw sand into it. The ultimate hope is to lower the ammonia levels in the tadpole tank to the point that I only need to do daily 30% water changes and will be able to lower my setup's water consumption.
