Raising Tadpoles (Day 36) - Where the Tadpoles Are Going
Day 36
Decided to test increasing the daily feeding from 22 ml to 29 ml of tadpole suspension (xenopus.com premium tadpole powder mixed into water). Now that the tadpoles have begun developing their back legs, they'll be expending quite a bit of energy. I can even see tiny toes on the most developmentally advanced tadpoles! The extra food should help them as they metamorphosize, with the roughly 0.75 gal I have, there should be plenty to spare. This is without even taking into account the roughly 3 days they wont eat as they transition from the froglet to frog stage, during which they'll shrink dramatically as they absorb their tails, or the decreased consumption as more of them move onto frog pellets around Nieuwkoop and Faber stage 63 - when their heads become frog shaped.
I'll have to call up the distributor I know next week to see whether they'll be willing to take the tadpoles piecemeal in batches of 20-40 or if they'll insist on doing it wholesale. Depending on their space and current stock, I may end up having to hold onto the frogs for longer than I had planned. In the worst case scenario, I may just contact a local exotic pet store I occasionally visit and see if the owner is interested. I actually may do that regardless to see what sort of offer I might get. It's an experienced shop that specializes in herps (reptiles/amphibians) and arachnids (particularly tarantulas and scorpions) with a pretty solid staff. Would be a fine place for some of them to go to though I don't see them having the capacity to take on anywhere near all of them (would also have the advantage of being a much shorter distance to transport them). Regardless of where they go, I have a few simple rules, such as the shop owners having shown ethical behavior in the past and having the experience necessary to instruct any potential new African Clawed Frog owners.
Oh no, how am I discovering your blog 37 days too late...
I am looking forward to observing their final stages from now on though :)
Glad you enjoyed! Still debating what I'll do next after this series concludes but in the meantime, the really interesting changes are about to begin.
