Albuquerque, New Mexico and the surrounding area is rife with treasures both natural and man made. One of my favorite places to experience nature in this area is Bachechi Open Space.

Located in the North Valley of Albuquerque, on the northern edge of Los Ranchos de Albuquerque, Bachechi Open Space was once a pecan orchard operated by the Bachechi family. The fertile valley farmland adjacent to the Rio Grande river has also been an equestrian stable, an alfalfa field, and a chicken farm in past reincarnations in its long history. Today it is a beautiful open space that invites the community to indulge in the natural splendor particular to this area.

The serene spot offers a glimpse of the bosque. It is a perfect place to take a peaceful stroll, have a picnic, or enjoy a bike ride. Studded throughout the space are many signs intended to educate visitors on this fraught and unique ecosystem. To further their endeavor of public education, a visitors center was constructed to house educational events which are hosted regularly throughout the year.

Bachechi Open Space showcases the wildlife of the Rio Grande wetlands; while you are exploring you may catch a glimpse of an owl, a flock of geese, or some turtles. The history of the pecan groves is still present, as well as plenty of cottonwood and sycamore trees offering an oasis of shade in this desert city.
