Progress and observations: August 17
This morning after work got a little wild.
I stayed a few minutes late to get authorization to take home a couple of 5 gallon buckets. They've got good seals on em, and I keep finding uses for such things. I have so many ideas, I don't know where to start.
On the way home, I stopped to pick up our first ever food preservation items: canning jars! It's not on our list of things to focus on, but it will be next summer, so I figured I'd start preparing slowly.
And then I got home...
This gives us our question for the day!
If a tree falls on my patio, and Melissa "thought she heard something," is that probably what she heard?
@burntoblog, we may have a project tomorrow... Between glasses of scotch.
Then there was this awesomely savage bit of nature:
This is a cicada killer wasp.
Quick facts about the cicada killer wasp:
- They're freaking giant.
- They live alone.
- According to Sophie (my princess), we need to stay away because they'll kill you.
- They won't kill you. They'll kill a cicada.
Here are some actual facts, in case my thorough scientific analysis isn't enough for you.
A naturally exciting morning on the aspiring homestead! There's never a full moment on our little half acre. That's a good thing.
Y'all have a good Friday evening, I'm gonna go work overtime.

Canning jar rules.
You can't have too many because you never have enough!
Good job planning ahead!
Melissa K. Norris on Pioneering Today Podcast says she cans 500-700 jars a year in the process of preserving most of their family's yearly food. We won't be anywhere near that percentage right off, but I figure if I get a dozen jars a month, we'll be around 150 by next summer harvest. That'll be a decent starting point I think.
Melissa (muh dear sweet wifey), is slowly getting on board with the idea, which helps a lot.
I did the same! Every payday I bought 2 cases for the longest time. I don't know how many I have.
How many are in her family?
Four in her family with a 13 year old son and a 9 year old daughter.
5 in mine with a 6 year old boy, 4 year old princess, and a 2 year old boy.
The number varies from resource to resource so I'm sticking with the rule....you can never have enough.
My husband was just asking me a few days ago how many jars I have.... Not easy to deal with moving around. I gave some to my sister before I moved and then purchased more after. Putting them in my storage trailer.... I just looked at him 🤔
He was like "how many"
I'm like I have NO idea, but I'm sure it's not enough 😂
I love canning I bet your wife will to!
