The Shy and Camouflaged Bassian Thrush

in #nature7 years ago (edited)

This shy, skulking, bird's mottled plumage provides great camouflage. It is the Bassian Thrush ( Zoothera lunulata). It sometimes goes by the name of Olive-tailed thrush. There are probably many better shots online but I was happy with this one. In my area this birds is usually found in dense temperate rainforest amidst the dark shadows of giant tree ferns. If you disturb one, they will run of fly a short distance and then stand still, merging into the background. This makes it a difficult bird to photograph. They forage for food by scratching around in the leaf litter. This one wandered just a little too close to a clearing, giving me just enough light to take a reasonable shot. @digitalis has posted images of a closely related bird, the Scaly Ground Thrush ( Zoothera dauma).

special thanks for sharing.

I love the camouflage of the animals! When they camouflage I feel they are smarter than us

Yes amazing camouflage isn't it.

Great bird...

Glad you enjoyed it.

Nice photo! Why does the eye look strange?

Thanks. I'm not sure what you mean. Perhaps it is the reflection from the camera flash you are referring to.

Perhaps. I mean that the white dot near the bottom of its eye makes it look like there is a light source below it.

Great capture. That bird has great camouflage.

Yes they can be hard to spot.

I couldn't see him on the miniature :)
Very cute... feathers look like fish scale.

Yeah it didn't make for the best thumbnail did it :-)
