Unicorns part 2. Why Does the Bible Mention Unicorns? Do you believe in Unicorns

in #nature6 years ago

Just a recap from part 1: Unicorns are not found in Greek mythology, but rather in the accounts of natural history, for Greek writers of natural history were convinced of the reality of unicorns, which they believed lived in India, a distant and fabulous realm for them. The earliest description is from Ctesias, who in his book Indika ("On India") described them as wild asses, fleet of foot, having a horn a cubit and a half (700 mm, 28 inches) in length, and colored white, red and black.

Now, this is not a real creature. This animal is totally fictitious. None of these are alive today and no scientist has ever found a fossil of one. However, unicorns are mentioned in the King James version of the Bible 9 times, in 5 different books, by at least 5 different authors: by Balaam, Moses, David, Isaiah, and even God himself in the book of Job. These are the verses that mention unicorns: Numbers 23:22 “God brought them out of Egypt; he hath as it were the strength of an unicorn.”
Numbers 24:8 “God brought him forth out of Egypt; he hath as it were the strength of an unicorn: he shall eat up the nations his enemies, and shall break their bones, and pierce them through with his arrows.”
Job 39:9 “Will the unicorn be willing to serve thee, or abide by thy crib?”
Job 39:10 “Canst thou bind the unicorn with his band in the furrow? or will he harrow the valleys after thee?”
Psalms 29:6 “He maketh them also to skip like a calf; Lebanon and Sirion like a young unicorn.”
Psalms 92:10 “But my horn shalt thou exalt like the horn of an unicorn: I shall be anointed with fresh oil.”
Deuteronomy 33:17 “His glory is like the firstling of his bullock, and his horns are like the horns of unicorns: with them he shall push the people together to the ends of the earth: and they are the ten thousands of Ephraim, and they are the thousands of Manasseh.”
Psalms 22:21 “Save me from the lion’s mouth: for thou hast heard me from the horns of the unicorns.”
Isaiah 34:7 “And the unicorns shall come down with them, and the bullocks with the bulls; and their land shall be soaked with blood, and their dust made fat with fatness.”
But what's the real answer? So I looked up the word unicorn in Noah Webster's 1828 dictionary and it said that this name is often applied to the rhinoceros. It said absolutely nothing about a horse. So then I looked up the word unicorn in the Webster's New World dictionary and it said it was a mythical horselike animal.

What a difference in definitions!

Then I looked up rhinoceros in the 1828 dictionary and it said that unicorn was the name of the one horned species of the rhinoceros, and bicornis was the name of the two horned species.

• Unicorns are not mentioned in any of the modern translations. Only in the King James version are they mentioned. Most of the modern translations say “wild ox.” Some translations even say “buffalo.”
• However, many Christian apologists are insistent that the King James Version is the most accurate of all the English translations. So because of this, some people, especially atheists, like to scoff at the Bible and make fun of it as a book of myths and fairy tales.
• However, it is important to understand that the definition of the word “unicorn” has changed over time.
• If you get an old 1828 Noah Webster’s Dictionary, which is the very first edition dictionary that Webster came out with about 200 years ago, and look up the word “unicorn” it says:
• Unicorn – An animal with one horn; the monoceros. this name is often applied to the rhinoceros.
• (This 1828 dictionary can be accessed free online. Just go to Google.com and type in “Noah Webster 1828” and it will be one of the first links that pop up.)

Then I found out that there is an extinct one-horned rhinoceros called Elasmotherium Sibiricum which scientists today call The Giant Unicorn according to this website:

Then I found out that the Latin bible actually uses the word Rhinoceros when the King James uses the word unicorn.
Well what do you think, don't believe everything until you have researched it.

What an amazing post @losthippie. Very interesting that the King James uses the word Unicorn, and also thought-provoking scriptures. I also find it amazing that the old Webster's says it is a rhinoceros, and then the New World dictionary says mythical horselike animal! Amazing research you've done here.
And your unicorn art is magnificent. Also the photographs - I love the effects on the first rhino. Did you manage to photograph these at the Kruger?
I really enjoyed this article, thanks for such an unusual topic! I've resteemed it, hope many people get to read this and see your art.

I think we have so many translations out there, and to figure out some words, mythical stories have always intrigued me, the photograph was taken at Mabalingwe, Northern Transvaal, I'm always turning photos to art or drawing something.

LMAO! Northern Transvaal! It's called Limpopo now doll! Mabalingwe is a great spot. It seems like you love history, etymology, and of course art and photography. This is what grabbed me about this post, you managed to combine all your passions!

I forget,sorry Limpopo, I'm old school.

Definitely, but do you agree that you managed to combine all your passions in this awesome post? Sounds like you really enjoyed researching, as well as the art !

Yes Idid, gets the brain rattled, and to draw what you write about is cool.

this was so interesting @losthippie! unicorn's are such a legend it would be crazy to think it was all taken from a rhino! lol I love the magical legend that comes with the fictional beast though!

Thank you for the support, yes I tend to agree, I like drawing the Horse Unicorn its just more interesting and mystical.

Kind of makes you wonder if there is something behind the oriental craze for rhino horn dust.

That made me wonder about the whole horn thing, whats its magical purpose, but it seems its all myth.

And at one time the legend of troy was just a myth.
