Special and Strange Plants - Venus housefly catcher
The Venus housefly catcher (Latin name: Dionaea muscipula, the latter means mouse trap) is a carnivorous plant that is quite popular and even available in the Netherlands, for the enthusiasts. Fleshy plants like these are rare in nature, and even more rare are the plants that can respond as quickly as the Venus fly fall. This species originates from the swamps in North and South Carolina (United States) and the reason for its aggressive survival strategy is that these samps do not contain enough nutrition for the plant. Therefore, the plant is designated for other food sources, such as flies.
The trap is activated by hairs on the leaf. When they are moved too fast one after another, such as when a fly lands, for example, the "leaves"closes very quick. How exactly that works, biologists do not know exactly, but the result is deadly for the fly in question, which is stuck between the leaves and is then slowly degraded by digestive juices. Did you know there are a limited number of wild venus fly traps in the Carolinas. The number is getting smaller so it is illegal to harvest them. All venus fly traps found in stores are from one plant taken from the wild and cloned. You will get a heavy fine if you take them from the wild.
I knew those are "protected" we dont see them that much, so indeed good to leave them in their habitat.
