Asian Giant Hornet, Trapped Queen #2

in #nature6 years ago (edited)

Once again awakened by that all too singular buzzing sound.

Another queen had found her way into our living space.

After my last posts about making ōsuzumebachi traps and then actually catching one,, @mslight2016st and I did a bit of research and confirmed that the only ōsuzumebachi (asian giant hornets) out and about right now are queens, who have just come out of hibernation and are searching for nesting locations. As such, it seems like a great time to nip the problem in the bud and trap these guys (gals, I suppose) before they can set up shop in and around our house. Come June, the workers will have been born, and be out of the newly built hives ready to do their thing.

The video just below was taken after we had managed to corral today's queen into the space between the screen of a window and the window glass. I placed two homemade traps inside the same space and, sure enough, after a lot of searching for an opening, she finally caught a whiff of the red wine and that was the end. She fell right in. I have since moved the trap back outside and currently have three homemade traps set up around the house.

As you can see, these queens are not super large. Over an inch, but not as big as queens are often known to be. The average Vespa mandarinia (Asian Giant Hornet) apparently grows to be about 2.2 inches in length. The queens are even bigger. I am wondering if the somewhat diminutive size of the two I have trapped may be due to their having just come out of hibernation. They are also a bit slow and "dopey" in their movements. Regardless, though the video may make it hard to tell, she wasn't tiny, and I didn't want to piss her off!

As I mentioned in my previous posts, these guys, even in the summer and autumn when they are much more active, generally mind their own business and leave humans alone.

That said, they can be fatal if provoked, and on average 30 to 40 people die annually here in Japan from their toxic stings.

It's always good to be careful, watch where you are walking, and inspect the eaves of buildings and the treetops wherever you go here in Japan. The ōsuzumebachi can also live underground. If you want to read some CNN "fear porn" about the insect, you can check out this article. They can be very deadly en masse.

All that said, I actually find them to be pretty fascinating creatures which simply need to be respected. I am not out trying to find them or make friends, but generally when one buzzes by, I back away quietly and go somewhere else, or just open a window and let them find their way out. In today's case I used a trap because, as I said, I don't feel like letting the queens set up shop all around my home where I have a wife and a child (and myself!) to look after.

The sad fate of today's queen. The red wine is too enticing!

Thanks for reading, nature lovers, and stay safe out there!

Holy Shit Mate, those Queens are massive!!
Having huge respect for these creatures is definitely the way to go especially considering the potential lethal stings.
I’m not sure I’d be comfortable knowing that could get into my bedroom while I was sleeping, I’d get a bit of bug proofing done mate.

Yeah, that pic of the monsters in the persons hand isn't mine. Looks like the ones we have may actually be the smaller variety. But yeah man. I'm on it. Fuck waking up sharing a bed with one of these guys! I don't remember if I replied to your "brown trousers" story or not, come to think of it. I don't think I did. Sounds scary as hell man! Stop the bus!

Haha, your dead right mate. The driver was an idiot freaking out like that.

Wow those queens are huge!
I live with some big hornets here in Thailand, I leave them alone and they leave me be.
Sometimes one will come and hover right in front of my face to check me out.
I know some people who believe the stings to have therapeutic value, and that the hornet itself can sense your illness and give you a sting.
Nature and the miracles of life are pretty fascinating...
Cheers, A.

That is super interesting. I know some folks here in Japan toss them in their alcohol and then let the mixture sit for 2 or 3 years. Whatever extra from the hornet is also in some medicinal-type energy drinks. As the sting itself can rot flesh, I am not sure how this all works!!

perhaps you should write a story from their perspective.

I kinda like that idea. Have no idea what the hell they are thinking about, though...

Buzzzzz.....build nest.....Bzzzzzzz.....food for eggs....buzzzz.....big pale sweaty bastard putting wine out in plastic bottles.....bzzzz.

I'm dumb about bees, and much more lame about hornets.

What's the difference btwn hornets and bees?

Comp/Contrast btwn "nest life" vs. "hive life"? Or are they pretty much the same?

Anyway, cool post, Bro.

Namaste, Jaichai

That's a great question. I don't know, either. More homework! :)

Oh, these are natural beauties of nature and amazing to see it's design and i believe that every creature of this nature have unique strengths and appearance and these are great to watch. But i understand that these are dangerous as people are getting serious issues with it, in my opinion you are doing an great job for your people. Thanks for sharing and wishing you an great day. Stay blessed. 🙂

Cheers, @chireerocks. I feel the same about these creatures. Blessings to you as well.

Thank you. 🙂

Oh good Christ, I want a whole lot of absolutely none of that! Those f*ckers are well beyond massive. I've heard of these suckers before but never experienced them. Oh, and I'm a beekeeper btw, so I'm quite comfortable around honeybees. Hmm, wonder if those queen hornets have stingers like my queen honeybees...not barbed, meaning, they can sting repeatedly very easily. yikes.

Yes, they are also on "full-auto." UGH. I know what you mean.

Christ those are huge! Lol

Damn, yeahI don't think that I would be letting them get a foothold in making a nest in my walls or ceiling @kafkanarchy84! They do seem pretty fascinating, but I agree, let them live somewhere else!

Man, I just did a little scouting mission putting more traps outside and there was one or two more. After getting buzzed close up and stared down a couple times I decided to fall back. Gotta calm down. Bit of an adrenal dump there. Looks like this territorial battle isn’t over.

From what I've read, they sound like they can be pretty dangerous. Suit up man, tape your sleeves, cover your face, and whoop some ass!

Holy shit they are fucking huge, would ran away like a fucking bitchh 😂😂😂

Many beautiful nature .Japan .I really like this post
