Daily Nature Fix: A Rainbow Shooting Out of Mitchell's Butte! (Original Photo)

in #nature8 years ago

Hello fellow nature enthusiasts. Tonight's daily nature fix is a photo I took while traveling around Arizona/Utah.  Now the title does sound a bit suggestive :-P, but it really does look that way, no???

^^^What a butte! ISO 200 ƒ/10 1/320 Nikon D90.

Mitchell Butte is located in the Monument Valley area of the Navajo nation, right on the AZ/UT boarder.  It stand about 6,500ft tall and is named for a prospector that found silver in the area in the 19th century.   The iron oxide it the ancient siltstone gives the whole valley it's reddish color, and centuries of erosion and uplift have made these incredible formations.  The valley is pretty much the backdrop for every classic western movie. Now, in full discretion, the rainbow wasn't emitting form the butte (unfortunately), but it was almost equally as rare of a sight.  Rain doesn't frequent the area, needless to say.  However, right as we were about to leave a few grey clouds formed and started a light drizzle and that set the stage for this awesome display.  I'm happy I was able to witness it and I'm glad you can too with this photo!

I post a nature-related blog every day, so make sure you follow me to see them all!  I'll see you tomorrow.
