Do Tarantulas Keep Frogs As Pets?

in #nature6 years ago

The other day I came across this little gem.

Although, after doing some research, I found this wasn't the case at all. If anything, the frog keeps the tarantula as a pet. Certain breeds of the tarantula in question are actually some of the most gentle creatures in the animal kingdom and have been found cuddling up to their pray more than eating it! It's not that the arachnid is keeping the frog as a pet, more that it just doesn't care that it's there. As the photo suggests, the frog helps eat insects that come into the arachnid's nest, but getting into its nest is a feat! They line their borrows with sticky webs to prevent insects from getting into it, ants and mites are usually not very interesting for the frogs to eat, and if there were too many ants that frog would either bail or be eaten by them. Anything that can get through this thick web lining is too big to be eaten by the frog! The frog takes advantage of the kindness of the spider because most of its predators will not screw with a tarantula, except some large birds or snakes. Think of it how some crazy humans will keep lions or bears as pets. They could kill you if they wanted to, especially if you annoy them, and if the tarantula gets hungry enough, it'll probably eat the frog...

Without a doubt

Well, that's an interesting relationship status...

That's an interesting fact.

There is purpose behind everything

That is weird and yet cool at the same time.

Sounds like symbiotism, both gaining a little something from the relationship. I doubt the spider would eat the frog, but it's possible. Most frogs and toads have defenses in their skin which makes them more trouble than they're worth to eat.

When you're hungry you'll eat anything.

Very interesting!
