#HHG10: Exquisite Lady Diana For Your Garden

in #nature6 years ago (edited)

Can someone please tell me why this plant is called "Lady Diana"? or short for "Lady Di"? I tried to Google but no results about it. I would think because this plant looks so exquisite and standing elegantly hence the name.

Heliconia psittacorum 'Lady Di'(Scientific) or Lady Di Heliconia or Parrot Beak or Parakeet Flower is a Tropical, Exotic, and Indoor Plants. In Malaysia, it is grown as a landscape plant. Its elegant, tropical flowers are long-lasting when cut and look great in bright, colorful arrangements.

Parakeet flower is an everblooming, tropical plant that produces an abundance of bright flowers above clumps of lush, evergreen leaves. With good care, it looks great all year around. A prolific year-round bloomer, this Heliconia gives a great splash of color with its bright red and yellow blooms. An excellent choice for your garden. Besides, Hummingbirds love this plant and enjoy its nectar.

It has long, banana-like leaves that are dark green and tatter easily in strong winds. The flowers are borne atop long, smooth, green flower stalks that are held above the leaves. They are comprised of red or orange-red bracts that hold small, tubular flowers. Each flower has a dark spot at the end, which makes it look like a parrot’s tongue hence its name parrot beak. It can reach a height of between 2 to 5 feet and spread between 3 to 5 feet.

Hi @ainie.kashif - I'm not sure why the call it the "lady Di," but it will be interesting to know.

It looked very much like a plant I enjoy very much and is common here in Cape Town, so I did some quick research - and sure enough they are related at the Order levels.

Order: Zingiberales
Family: Heliconiaceae
Genus: Heliconia

This is my favourite flower, called the Sterilitzia:

I have seen this flower mostly in movies, it look so gorgeous with combination of yellow, red and green. It’s like a lady wearing multi coloured dress, and she is looking sleek and elegant. Stunning post! Stay blessed!

Hi Shanu, yes I agree with you, the flowers look so elegant right like a lady standing and dressing elegantly. I would think because of that it was called the Lady Di, in honor for the best dress lady of the world. Stay Blessed too :)
