Norouz Greenery - MyPictureDay #20 Submission

Following on from my Norouz article here these are some photos of greenery - primarily sprouts.

Norouz is a festival of rebirth, celebrated on the Vernal Equinox, and perhaps this is symbolised very effectively in the form of these young sprouts, which are a core component of the Haft-Seen . They can be either wheat, lentils, or any host of other crops. These are probably the most ubiquitous component of any Norouz table spread.

If you wish , you can buy them from stores, and indeed there are a plethora of roadside stalls available which sell these sprouts in all kinds of pots:

They are often sold adjacent to various flowers, principally hyacinths but also daffodils, tulips and many other varieties of flower:

Although you can buy them on their own, it is more satisfying to grow these sprouts from scratch

Often these are sold adjacent to goldfish, which represent new life. Although I love fish, personally I am not too keen on all these poor fish being sold en masse, many of which may not enjoy the life that they are supposed to symbolise:

Traditionally, the greenery are disposed of on the thirteenth day of norouz, known as Sizdah Behdar, when young single people tie them up and whisper a wish for marriage.
