In 1985 I had the opportunity to play with my group in Portugal, specifically the Azores Islands and much more specific in the city of Ponta Delgada on the island of São Miguel.

We were going to play with Los Cañoneros in the Micaelense Coliseum during the three days of the carnival, the most important celebration that takes place there. However, a hurricane prolonged our stay on the island for much longer than expected.

First of all we must say that San Miguel is of an impressive beauty with spectacular landscapes and environments, which include the oceanic coasts, which are impressive and sites such as Las Furnas, Lagoa do Fogo or Lagoa das Sete Cidades. For being a volcanic island, all its geography is very particular.

As an experience it was something spectacular, because even though the carnival is a party of renown throughout the country (the Coliseum carnival concerts are broadcast throughout Portugal on TV), we were the first foreign group to participate in that celebration. And the receptivity of the Azoreans was simply spectacular.

For that trip we made a cover of a song by two Azorean authors, well known and respected throughout Portugal, "Charleston" with lyrics by Víctor Cruz and music by Teofilo Frazao, who is also the composer of the Azores anthem.

The cover we made was kept in our repertoire and was finally included in one of our albums and keeping special memories of that trip for me.

The shows at the Colosseum were an amazing experience for us, firstly for the characteristics of the place, an Italian-style theater, very large, with lots of luxury and large balconies. During the three days the attendees dressed gala costume, with only masks in allusion to the carnival.

The national artists who were part in all the events were a rock and roll group, in the style of the 50s and the Portuguese Light Army Orchestra that played with much insistence (and quality) Glenn Miller's repertoire, which transported you more back yet. These two elements, added to the atmosphere of the site, made one feel as if you had traveled in time. The song "In the mood", is for me still associated with that theater, the carnivals, the Azores and, in general, Portugal. The picture we lived there those days is exactly the same as what you can see in Glenn Miller's video.

The time we were there also gave rise to a fleeting romance. Of course, with all the clarity that in a few days everything would have been in the past. Given that certainty, the girl constantly put a song "to not forget that it was all a matter of time", precisely that of Alan Parsons Project: "Time". Since then I have the constant association between the meaning of time and that song.

That's how in a single trip to an island, three songs emerged that marked me.

En 1985 tuve la oportunidad de ir a tocar con mi grupo a Portugal, específicamente a las Islas Azores y mucho más específico a la ciudad de Ponta Delgada en la isla de São Miguel.

Íbamos a tocar con Los Cañoneros en el Coliseo Micaelense los tres días del carnaval, la fiesta más importante que se celebra en el lugar. Sin embargo un huracán prolongó nuestra estadía en la isla por mucho más tiempo del previsto.

Ante todo hay que decir que San Miguel es de una belleza impresionante con unos paisajes y ambientes espectaculares, que incluyen las costas de mar oceánico, que son impresionantes
y sitios como Las Furnas, la Lagoa do Fogo o Lagoa das Sete Cidades. Por ser una isla volcánica, toda su geografía es muy particular.

Como vivencia fue algo espectacular, porque aún siendo los carnavales una fiesta de renombre en todo el país (los conciertos de carnaval del Coliseo se transmiten a todo Portugal por TV), nosotros fuimos el primer grupo extranjero en participar en dicha celebración. Y la acogida de los azorianos fue sencillamente espectacular.

Para ese viaje nosotros hicimos una versión de una canción de dos autores azorianos, muy conocidos y respetados en todo Portugal, “Charleston” con letra de Víctor Cruz y música de Teofilo Frazao, quien también es el compositor del himno de las Azores.

La versión que hicimos quedó en nuestro repertorio y finalmente fue incluida en uno de nuestros discos y guardando para mí recuerdos especiales de ese viaje.

Las presentaciones en el Coliseo fueron una experiencia asombrosa para nosotros, en primer lugar por las características del lugar, un teatro de tipo italiano, muy grande, con mucho lujo y grandes balcones. Durante los tres días los asistentes visten de gala, con tan solo máscaras en alusión al carnaval.

Los artistas nacionales que participaron en todos los eventos eran un grupo de rock & roll, al mejor estilo de los años 50 y la Orquesta Ligera del Ejercito Portugués que interpretaba con mucha insistencia (y calidad) repertorio de Glenn Miller, lo cual te transportaba más atrás aún. Esos dos elementos, sumados al ambiente del sitio, lo hacían sentir a uno como si hubieras viajado en el tiempo. La canción In the mood, se me quedó asociada a ese teatro, a los carnavales, a las Azores y, en general, a Portugal. El cuadro que vivimos allá esos días es exactamente igual al que pueden observar en el video de Glenn Miller.

El tiempo que estuvimos allá también dio pie a un romance fugaz. Por supuesto, con toda la claridad de que en unos días todo habría quedado en el pasado. Ante esa certeza, la chica constantemente colocaba una canción “para no olvidarse que todo era cuestión de tiempo”, precisamente la de Alan Parsons Project: “Time”. Desde entonces tengo la asociación constante entre el significado del tiempo y esa canción.

Así fue como en un solo viaje a una isla, surgieron tres canciones que me marcaron.

1985 hatte ich die Gelegenheit, mit meiner Gruppe in Portugal, genauer gesagt den Azoren-Inseln und viel spezifischer in der Stadt Ponta Delgada auf der Insel São Miguel zu spielen.

Wir spielten mit Los Cañoneros im Micaelense Coliseum während der drei Karnevalstage, dem wichtigsten Fest, das dort stattfindet. Ein Hurrikan verlängerte unseren Aufenthalt auf der Insel jedoch viel länger als erwartet.

Zunächst einmal muss man sagen, dass San Miguel von beeindruckender Schönheit ist, mit spektakulären Landschaften und Umgebungen, zu denen die eindrucksvollen ozeanische Küsten und Orte wie Las Furnas, Lagoa do Fogo oder Lagoa das Sete Cidades gehören. Als eine vulkanische Insel ist ihre gesamte Geographie sehr speziell.

Als ein Erlebnis war es etwas Spektakuläres, denn obwohl der Karneval eine landesweite Berühmtheit ist (die Coliseum-Karnevalskonzerte werden im ganzen Land im Fernsehen übertragen), waren wir die erste ausländische Gruppe, die an dieser Feier teilnahm. Und die Empfänglichkeit der Azoreaner war einfach spektakulär.

Für diese Reise haben wir ein Lied von zwei in ganz Portugal bekannten und angesehenen azorischen Autoren aufgenommen, "Charleston" mit Texten von Víctor Cruz und Musik von Teofilo Frazao, der auch der Komponist der Azoren-Hymne ist.

Das Cover, das wir gemacht haben, wurde in unserem Repertoire aufbewahrt und wurde schließlich in eines unserer Alben aufgenommen und hält für mich besondere Erinnerungen an diesen Trip bereit.

Die Auftritte im Colosseum waren für uns eine erstaunliche Erfahrung, zum einen für die Besonderheiten des Platzes, ein Theater im italienischen Stil, sehr groß, mit viel Luxus und großen Balkonen. Während der drei Tage kleideten die Teilnehmer Gala-Kostüme mit nur Masken in Anspielung auf den Karneval.

Die nationalen Künstler, die an allen Veranstaltungen teilnahmen, waren eine Rock'n'Roll-Gruppe im Stil der 50er Jahre und das Lichtorchester der portugiesischen Armee, das mit viel Nachdruck (und Qualität) Glenn Millers Repertoire spielte, das dich noch mehr zurückversetzte. Diese beiden Elemente, die der Atmosphäre des Colliseums hinzugefügt wurden, gaben einem das Gefühl, als wäre man in der Zeit gereist. Das Lied "In the mood" ist für mich immer noch mit diesem Theater, dem Karneval, den Azoren und ganz allgemein mit Portugal verbunden. Das Bild, das wir dort zu sehen bekamen, ist genau das, was Du in Glenn Millers Video sehen kannst.

Die Zeit, die wir dort waren, führte auch zu einer Liebesaffäre. Natürlich mit der ganzen Klarheit, dass in ein paar Tagen alles in der Vergangenheit bleiben würde. Angesichts dieser Gewissheit spielte das Mädchen ständig ein Lied, "um nicht zu vergessen, dass alles um Zeit ging", genau das von Alan Parsons Project: "Time". Seitdem habe ich die ständige Verbindung zwischen der Bedeutung der Zeit und diesem Lied.
