My2018: A Tour Around My Town - Abeokuta, The Rock City

in #my20187 years ago (edited)

Brief Background

Abeokuta is the capital city of Ogun State, Southwestern Nigeria. The city is known for its ancient heritage and this is obvious in the city framework. The city (Abeokuta, meaning Under the rock) got its name from the famous Olumo Rock, which served as a refuge for the Egba warriors during the war against the Ibadan people in the 19th Century.
The city is also known for it's peace and serenity, being mostly dominated by civil workers and middle income earners.

The Pictures below shows some of the most notable places in the city of Abeokuta.

Palace of The Alake Of Egbaland, Ake, Abeokuta

The Alake of Egbaland is the paramount ruler of the Egba kingdom in Abeokuta. There are four other kings in the city, which are The Olowu of Owu, The Osile of Oke Ona, The Olubara of Ibara and The Agura of Gbagura, but the Alake is the Head of them all.

The Centenary Hall, Ake, Abeokuta.

This structure was built in 1930 to commemorate a hundred years of peace and settlement of the Egba people on the land.

The First Church in Nigeria

Though the rocks in the city are not so big, they are distributed in various locations across the city. Some people even build their houses on those rocks, and some places of worship are situated on the rock to be alone with their creator. I was unable to go to the main entrance of Olumo Rock.

Many sculptures can be found in various places in the city of Abeokuta and most of them are found on roundabouts in the city. One of them is this sculpture at Ijaiye roundabout.

Opic Circle

The Opic Circle is located at the Abeokuta City Centre in Oke-Ilewo. Oke Ilewo is the main commercial hub of the city. There is also a massive construction of the Abeokuta City Centre, which is to house the largest shopping mall, Bank Corporate offices and much more.
