My 2018: A Tour Around My Town: Photo Tour of the Milford Shore
My 2018: A Tour Around My Town
A Brief Photo Tour of the Milford Shore
Recently @anomadsoul announced a #My2018 contest aimed at bringing together people across the world and sharing the experiences of our everyday lives. In this portion of the contest, @anomadsoul asked if we share a tour of the town that we live in.

Milford, Connecticut
I grew up in a small coastal town called Milford, Connecticut. I have lived here for most of my life. Milford has over 14 total miles of shoreline facing Long Island Sound, which is the most out of any town or city in the State. The beach and the coast is what makes Milford a thriving place to live. I decided to make this post dedicated to the Milford coastline. At first I was thinking about giving a tour of the entire town, but there were way too many ideas going through my head of places I needed to include. This tour will be specific to the shore... and what better day to post it than #BeachWednesday?!
Signal Rock
The photo above is a picture of 'Flag Rock' otherwise known as 'Signal Rock'. This is arguably one of the most iconic features of the Milford coastline. This massive natural rock is located at 'Anchor Beach' and has a large active flagpole on top. At low-tide, you can walk out to the rock and climb around. In the summertime at high-tide, experienced locals use it as a spot to jump into the water.
Potato Rock
This massive rock sits down on the shores of 'Anchor Beach' as well. I remember once hearing a rumor that scientists were able to trace the origins of the rock to the continent of Africa... Regardless, it certainly looks out of place compared to the other rocks around.
Woodmont Pier
This pier is legendary. I have made some incredible memories at the end of this pier. Back in highschool I used to go with a girlfriend and we would jump off the end of the pier at sunrise. The water would be glowing as the sun crossed the horizon. They were magical mornings that I will remember forever. Other than that, this pier is mainly used by fisherman.
Morningside
Morningside is a community located on the shores of Milford. It is special to me because my grandparents live in this community. From 1981 to 1989 my grandmother Alberta became the first woman Mayor of Milford and was loved by many. She recently received a Hall of Fame award for being a 'Living Treasure' in the town of Milford. Morningside is well known for it's massive sea wall. In the video below, you can see a car that flew off the wall a few years back.
Gulf Beach Pier
This is one of the best spots in town to catch the sunset. The Gulf Beach parking lot is usually full of cars around dusk-time as people watch their days turn to night. A burger joint called 'Goodies' is located at Gulf Beach which makes it a great place to go for lunch on a summer day. Another fellow STEEMian in Milford, @tattoodjay, takes some amazing photos from Gulf beach and around the town. Give him a follow to see more of the beauty Milford has to offer!
Walnut Beach
Walnut Beach is on the side of town known as 'Devon'. It's a large sandy beach with a brilliant mile-long boardwalk connecting to another great beach called 'Silver Sands State Park'. As you can see in the photo above, Walnut beach has a pier much like the one at Gulf Beach. They also have recreational activities like volleyball nets as you can see in the photo below.
Silver Sands
Silver Sands is a Connecticut State Park located on the shores of Milford. There is a mile-long boardwalk that connects Silver Sands to Walnut Beach... but there is something even more special about Silver Sands. At low tide there becomes a 1/2 mile access sandbar that leads from the shore to a small, restricted island called 'Charles Island'. Some say this island holds treasure from infamous pirate Captain Kidd when he visited Milford in 1699. The sandbar becomes fairly dangerous as the tide comes in quickly. In the photo above you can vaguely see the island straight ahead at the end of the boardwalk. In the photo below, the island can be seen on the left-hand side of the picture.
Fort Trumbull
Another neighborhood community with a nice seawall, Fort Trumbull sits beside the Milford Harbor. The two photo's below were taken at the bottom of the stairs that lead to the beach. At low-tide there are plenty of sandbars to explore and play with your dog on. These pictures were taken just as the snow began to fall.
The Harbor
The Milford harbor waits eagerly through the winter. As the warm weather comes around this place becomes bustling with activity. From fishermen, to recreational boaters and jet-skiers, the Milford harbor is a prime location for summer fun. For now, it's icy and the snow is falling down.
Happy #BeachWednesday
