My 2018: A Tour Around My Town: Wangsa Maju
Sometimes we plan a big holiday to some place far away but we never do a touristic activity in our hometown, because it is what we've known all of our lives.~ by @anomadsoul
This spur an interest in me to take a tour around my town. I always thought Wangsa Maju is a small town in comparison to the city of Kuala Lumpur. Little do I know I was wrong. It took me almost 3 and half days to travel to every hook and corner of my town to take photos for this blog post. Although I can't possibly take all the photos of everything and every corners, you will at least get an idea what to expect if you are here. Phew! I have never sweated so much since parenthood.
This is a contest run by @anomadsoul, thanks to his wonderful initiative, also thankful for delegation from @blocktrades to him. For more info of this contest, check out the link below.

WANGSA MAJU
I am from Malaysia so we use Malay as our main language. Wangsa Maju means Advanced Dynasty, if I would directly translate it word for word. It sounds funny to me but it is the correct tranlation. Imagine a town with the name Advanced Dynasty, I will think it is somewhere in China. But no, Wangsa Maju is in Setapak, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. It ia basically a hill man-made into a town, so wherever you turn to, you see trees, tall and big one. If you love variety of trees, you must come here. But I will not do any treephotography here.
Wangsa Maju is divided into different sections called Wangsa Maju Section 1, 2, 4, 5 and 10, Desa Setapak, Sri Rampai and part of Jalan Genting Klang.

Without further ado, let me tour you around Wangsa Maju here in this post. Let me start with something everyone can relate with >> Food!
Food
Something wonderful about this town, also the same trademark of my country is that we have diversities of races, hence diversities of culture and celebration and all types of food.
You can find all sorts of food here in my town; mainly Chinese cuisine, Malay cuisine, Indian cuisine, Chinese-Muslim, Indian-Muslim (mamak) cuisine, as well as some Korean food, Thai food, Japanese food, Arabic and Mexican food here and there. I can't possibly cover all because...hmm....it will take me days to blog, and it will be a looooooong touristic read. lol
1. Chinese cuisine
The most famous Chinese food is what we called economy rice. There will be wide selection of dishes; meat, vege, egg, finger food. You choose what you want, and usually we eat them with our staple food, rice, or plain congee.
Economy mixed rice - the most famous food here because it is cheap and you get to eat balanced meal if you choose correctly. Usually come with a free soup-of-the-day and free chinese tea. This one is taken at Ee Fatt, Desa Setapak, but you can economy mixed rice everywhere in the town.
A meal of economy mixed rice such as this will cost RM5.50. Now you know why most people here eat this everyday, bonus point is you don't need to cook.
I will just list down the usual food under this catergory and its photo, because photo speaks louder than words.
Char Kuey Teow - Fried Flat Rice Noodle. At KK Kopitiam, Sri Rampai.
Kolok Mee - Dry Noodle with fragrance pork oil. At Ee Fatt, Desa Setapak.
*Pork Noodle, with your choice of noodle, you can have it with soup or have it dry with their signature soy sauce. At Restoran Chiew Soon, Desa Setapak.
Chicken rice - steamed chicken with fragrance rice cooked with chicken stock. At Restoran Mang Chuan, Desa Setapak.
Pan Mee - a Hakka-dish made from flat noodle dough, either eat it dry or with soup. From Ee Fatt, Desa Setapak.
Wat Tan Hor in Kantonis - flat rice noodle cooked in nice savoury egg gravy. My son loves this he can eat daily. From KK kopitian, Sri Rampai.
Hong Kong Chu Cheong Fan - Rice Noodle Wrap, either plain, or wrap with shrimp or meat. Sorry it does not look nice because I packed it home to eat. After transferred to plate, out of arrangement. Or else it will look nicely rolled. Restoran RDS, Desa Setapak.
Yong Tao Foo - also a Hakka dish, usually stuff tofu or vegetables like brinjal, bittergourd, mushroom and chilli with meat paste, and deep fried them. At Wangsa Maju Section 2.
Fish Head Noodle - if you love fish and milk, you must try this. Soup is cooked with evaporated milk until you get the milky broth. Yum..
Claypot Chicken Rice - Rice cooked in claypot upon order with fragrant soy sauce chicken and chinese sausage, with salted fish or without.
Enough Chinese food, although there are many more types I can't possibly list down all. Above are those popular ones. Majority here in Wangsa Maju are Chinese, hence the wide selection of Chinese food. Let us move on to the next.
2. Malay Cuisine
The most famous one is 'nasi lemak' - rice cooked in fragrant coconut milk, usually comes with roasted peanut, fried anchovies, cucumber and hard-boiled egg, served with special chilli paste we called 'sambal'.
*Wrapped up in pyramid-shape. It is so cheap at RM1.50, anyone who needs to save up will have this often.
Open up the wrap and it looks like this. I can eat nasi lemak everyday.
Satay - Barbecued marinated chicken/beef, served with satay peanut sauce, with cucumber and raw onions as sides.
Malay mixed economy rice. Similar way of selling like Chinese mixed economy rice, except you can see more spicy hot dishes here. If you like the umphh chilli, go for this one.
3. Mamak food
The most famous at mamak is 'roti canai' or flatbread.
Plain roti canai. Usually comes with three types of curry; chicken curry, fish curry and dhal (lentil) curry. It is cheap and nice, cost you only RM1.50 - RM2.
Besides plain flatbread, you can choose those with special addition; add egg or butter&sugar or banana or onion or Milo and etc.
*Maggi goreng - Fried Instant Noodle with egg, vege, fried tofu and its spices. I am sorry I couldn't trace my own photo in phone, perhaps I accidentally deleted it. This one I took it from here.
I will cover only these 3 main cuisine, and believe me there are so many more food here you can foodfest - food heaven. I consider myself lucky to be in this town.
Places of interest
You don't need to travel to the city for malls. Here, there are 4 major malls for you to choose; Aeon at Wangsa Maju Sec 1, Aeon Big at Wangsa Maju Sec 5, Wangsa Walk at Wangsa Delima and Setapak Central along Jalan Genting Klang.
Besides malls, if you are a tourist, you certainly must visit Royal Selangor (Pewter) Visitor Centre, to experience pewter and its display.
There is no beach here because it is a hill-land, but we have lake if you want to see water. 😉
Let us look at the mall first.
1. Setapak Central
This is the mall that we frequent simply because there is almost everything here; food and food and food, cinema, indoor playground, clothes, gadgets, groceries, music shops, baby shops, toy shops, accessories, saloon, beauty center, pet shop, bookshop and many more.
Pet Shop
Book Shop
Food Court
Karaoke
Cinema
Indoor playground - a clean one which is important.
Music Shop - you can enrol for music classes too.
Restaurant Teh Tarik - mamak style.
The center section in the mall usually is decorated according to theme. This is Chinese New Year theme.
Just the walkway itself is entertaining, so often I just window shop or leisure walk with kid.
Korean shop
Daiso - brand from Japan, you can get everything just here
Sports shop
Parkson - the main department store here
Econsave - the supermarket chain here
Gadgets
Computer shop
Pharmacies
Saloon
Baby Shop
and FOOD again :)
Trust me I can only cover 30% of the shops. Come here for a visit and experience it yourself. It is fun and relaxing.
2. Other malls
Aeon Wangsa Maju Section 1
Wangsa Walk
Aeon Big
Giant Hypermarket Mall
3. Royal Selangor Visitor Centre
This is a go-to-place to view various exhibition of art and daily item made by pewter. I personally haven't been there for a thorough visit until I made this post I realise what a gem is this place.
Outside
The Cafe - the food here is nice, mainly Western food, which I tried once.
4. Taman Tasik Sri Rampai
This is the small lake ideal for casual picnic, fishing, jogging, cycling, walking, dating or just relax do nothing.

Because not only it has heavenly food and awesome pleasant malls and some places of interest, but all the facilities such as clinics, hospital, hotels, banks, schools, petrol station, dobby/laundry shop and 24-hour mini mart.

There are general clinics everywhere too
Banks
Hospitals, local ones
There many schools too, definitely more than 10. I just took a few because I need to rush home to cook 😉.
Convenient fruit shop
Mosque - for prayer for Muslims, at WM sec 1.
There are many hotels too. I include only a few here because my smartphone speed is slowering.

Lastly, most people's main mode of transportation.
LRT-Light Railway Transit. This one bring us to everywhere in Kuala Lumpur city, uptown or downtown at a reasonable price. It is so convenient and most people take this to work too.
I have come to an end of my tour for all of you. I hope you enjoy the stay and touristic activity here.
Overall, Wangsa Maju has been expanding from a tiny green town to a bigger town with more buildings, and it is still growing in its township and population. I love it even more after this tour.
Best motto in life - "Enjoy life, travel alot, laugh daily, live the love".
With love, @iamjadeline
Looks great! I haven't been to Malaysia yet, but hope to when I get back to south-east Asia. Most likely KL but hopefully some other places too. I am definitely a fan of Asian cuisine, including Malaysian but I'd like to get there and try the real thing! :)
KL itself already will need few days to one week to explore 🙂 Malaysia is a nice place but do get a friend or two who can tour you around. Then you get to experience the best and worth your stay here.
