महाभारत में धर्म की जय हुई थी, परन्तु उसमें इतने बड़ेबड़े
ज्ञानी, दानी एवं शूरमा काम आए थे, कि वास्तव में भारत का
पतन महाभारत के बाद ही से आरंभ हुआ । वेद व शास्त्र के पढ़ने
वाले द्रोणाचार्य जैस विद्वान् एवं भीष्म व कर्ण जैसे बहादुर योद्धा
काम आ चुके थे ।तब लोग अंधेरी रात की तरह छोटे-छोटे दीपकों
को ही सूर्य मान बैठे। जो थोड़ा पढ़े थे, वे ही विद्वान् कहलाने
लगे । साधारण बल वाले योद्धा कहलाने लगे । धीरे-धीरे अवनति
होती गईविद्या तथा बल का लोप होता गया । आपस में वैमनस्य
भी बढ़ता गया । जब यह दशा हो गईतो विदेशियों की लार
टपकने लगी । उनकी दृष्टि इस सोने की चिड़िया की ओर पड़ी । द

दयानन्द को ब्रह्मचारी रख कर वेदशास्त्रों की पूर्ण शिक्षा दी । शिक्षा
पाने के पश्चात् वे गुरु की आज्ञानुसार अकेले ही वेदों का झण्डा।

सकता है कि, दयानन्द कितने विद्वान, वैर्यवान्, ज्ञानी एवं
पुरुषार्थी थे कि, उन्होंने सारी दुनिया के खिलाफ अकेले ही आवाज
उठाई। न उनका कोई सहयोग था, न उनके पास धन था, केवल
दृढ़ विश्वास ईश्वर और वेद पर था ।
