This challenge, started by @jokossita here, is a great incentive to dig into those dusty old memories. Music can have powerful associations to a life long forgotten - hopefully more good than not.

Day 10

A song by your favourite band
Blimey, this is one of those really tough questions, because picking just one feels like you're then negating all the other bands that are just as worthy of the position of favourite.

So what song did I choose? The Crow & The Butterfly by Shinedown

I think this song was the first one to bring the band to my notice.

From the song's Wikipedia page:

Brent Smith explained on a radio interview program, Rockline, that while the band was writing the new album, he had a dream about a mother whose daughter died a month before her son Trevor was born. He wrote the song about the mother dealing with the death of her child and trying to move on.

As a band I love how they sing about social issues and injustices, turning powerfully-messaged lyrics into inspiring, energising and popular music.

On the band's Wikipedia page with regards to their musical style, it says:

Shinedown's music has most commonly been described as hard rock, alternative metal, post-grunge, and alternative rock. In August 2013, Kerch disagreed with more specialized genre ascribed to the band, stating that "We're just a rock 'n' roll band" while conceding that each album did have a markedly different rock sound to them by design.

I must admit that all these new 'specialised genres' confuses me. Keep it simple, people. Keep it simple. Rock 'n' roll rules!

I was trying to think of just what appeals so much about this band, and found a wonderful description from this blogger, where she writes:

Shinedown writes songs out of passion, out of pain, out of anger sometimes, love. This is what makes them different from the rest. They are emotionally invested in the music. What I love about them is that every song has a good message. Everyone in some way can relate to their songs. Why? Because they write about things that matter and that everyone in their life will go through.

She also notes that the band doesn't write for the audience, but about what is meaningful - the social injustices and issues I mentioned earlier. And their songs don't denigrate women. Yay.

This is the list from which the music challenge is based off of. I will be modifying some of the questions if more fitting.

Interesting group, but it is very similar in style to some others that I know, though. And oh God, how the vocalist of this band is like Ozzy Osbourne! It seems externally and some intonations in the voice.

Interesting observation, I hadn't made that association. :)

What a tragic story for a song. Not just for the parents but for the new baby. I'll have to listen to some more of their stuff. It's a Sunday, maybe I can take some time out to listen to Broods and Shinedown on Youtube for a bit.

Certainly a sad topic, but they made it sound beautiful at least. I hope you enjoy some of the other songs. I have favourites but everyone's taste is different so I won't try and influence you lol. ;)

Never hear of this band before, but what you say is true about the lyrics! ! Inspiring, I think I will be listening albums of this band soon hahaha thanks for sharing

I don't think you'll be disappointed. :)
