Music Video and Making-of "In the Mist" with my animated illustrations: Original Music, behind the scenes, from art to video

In depth article explaining the concept and making of my song and videoclip, featuring my own animated illustrations. Don't laugh too much about our "hot potato" to create the steam special effects

Press Play to watch the video/listen to my song "In the mist". There is a second video in the post including the "Making of".

In the Mist is the intro song that opens my second music illustrated album The Underliving that shows a mystical realm, a world that is "living" but not "alive" and reach us through silence, through shadows, through dreams and thoughts, through ghostly fog... and anything that can evoke a presence in our mind. A world dormant in the corner of our eyes, always there but hidden to our sight.

Would I fade myself if I step into the Mist?

In the mist is a rather peaceful song, but it resonates with a ghostly damped echo, like a blurred shape in a fog can be anything we imagine it to be. A realm of reveries in the mist, lost veiled memories concealed in an alluring grey and white realm. Like the fog itself the song shares a little bit of my personal philosophy too.

The end of the song is like a medley of many themes in the album, where some motifs repeat like in a medley... "Unfurl", "become", "don't be sad" but it also halts and stops to mutter softly it's own mantra, just like the fog...

Settle, Rest... then move on... further on

For all of those who stumble upon this post and still don't know me, I love fantasy, and as both composer and illustrator I love to combine my art and music. With the collaboration of my partner and co-producer Héctor (@hedac) we also love to make music videos. This one has a few years already but remains one of my favourites for many reasons, including part of the location is my beloved native island, La Palma. I find the "mist" so ghostly and eerie, and while it cloaks things it also wraps them in mystery.

kantele.jpg

The stringed instrument I play is a kantele, a traditional music instrument from Finland that also has other names in other countries like kokle in Latvia, kankle in Lithuania, kannel in Estonia or gusli in Russia.
My 10 string kantele, a Finnish and Karelian folk instrument with triangular shaped soundbox, when plucked it produces a bell-like heavenly tone. It plays almost in solo in the intro. This music instrument is also known as "Baltic psaltery" Mine was made and gifted by my friend and instrument maker Gerry Henkel.

The Making of the video (includes some bloopers and "behind the scenes")

Click above to watch the behind and scenes video. It includes some funny moments and even the mysterious Mr @hedac appears on camera for a selfie, which is really a unique and rare event
It was a very sweet experience in which we learn to make the most from very humble resources. With our camcorder we worked all the details to transform the cover of my album into a living character. With the help of my friend Alassie from El Costurero Realas stylist and the assistance of our friend Felix we created some magic! Great part of the video is filmed indoors and we used regular ice to make the fog of a standard fog machine to flow slower. Lots of laughters and imagination...

Indoors and light test shooting

Filming in the place I was born: La Palma

Outdoors locations are filmed in La Palma, my native island. Most of the landscapes belong to La Caldera de Taburiente and we were lucky enough to film some takes of a raven.

raven - by Priscilla Hernandez (yidneth.com).jpg

Actually it is an African subspecies of the common raven, Corvus corax tingitanus. The gorgeous bird volunteered for the gladding scenes at the end of the video that work so well with the lyrics (posted later on this post)

Incorporating my drawings and matte painting in the video.

As I said some of the sceneries were transformed slightly by matte painting and colour grading to make them look from another world.

I worked on all the concept art and @hedac helped me to turn my illustrations into animated magic. Most of the landscapes are altered using a technique called matte-painting. We would animate the layers. The particles of smoke in the vortex at the end were all different shapes I drew myself.

Bringing "The Underliving creatures" to life

The Underliving is a made-up word I created, a shadow of our own, a world of "beings" that never lived but feel very alive and communicate with us through the silence, through our thoughts, through the voice of the wind, that fill with their presence empty spaces, that lives side by side with us, but always veiled and unseen, sometimes protecting us or sometimes misleading us. The Underliving along with "ghosts" and "fairies" are the third kind of creature portrayed in YIDNETH mythical Universe that has spawned. The album portrays the story of a chosen child that can perceive this "Otherworld" and longs to be part of it.
I love drawing monsters and creatures. I guess some spawned from my sleep paralysis experiences but others were inspired by impressions and feelings.

We animated some of them also during the video... so you can see them "walking" here and there.

From my Cover illustration to music video

Priscilla Hernandez The Underliving - by Priscilla Hernandez (yidneth.com)-3.jpg

It was a challenge to try to transform myself into my own cover illustration. We used massive amounts of white yarn provided by my friend Bryony and some braided synthetic extensions. The dots on my forehead were placed by make up and tracked, my partner Héctor added the glow in CGI and also animated the extensions so there is a subtle movement in them. My friend Alassie (talented designer and stylist) did my makeup and used feathers in my forehead to mimic my own illustration. I may say that I never thought of myself when I drew the drawing. "Yidneth" is the female character of a story I wrote and also my trademark and company, so it was some kind of "cosplaying".

inthemsitmaking.jpg

As funny anecdote I will say that if you are laying on the floor with all those extension arranged you can't move for many hours until all the takes are done. You can't move AT ALL, not even if you need to go to the toilet haha.

The Lyrics and my drawing for the album:

in the mist - by Priscilla Hernandez (yidneth.com)-3.jpg
Above: An illustrated I drew for this song and that was featured in the album. I made this drawing way before I did the cover of final concept art of the video.

theunderliving.com is a world of reveries in the mist, lost veiled memories concealed in an alluring grey and white realm. And like the fog itself... Settle, rest and then move on, further on

Voices... voices...
rising... rising...
Comfort me when I dive in sorrow
meandering through this lonely moor
And if a doleful thought is drawing near
Could you obscure it make it disappear?
Would I fade myself if I step into the mist?
Engulf the unribboning light
escaping through my seams
into the alluring gray and white
transient world you build
this bleary ruins the reveries
of your dim kingdom now concealed
in the mist
Now concealed
And in such stillness I can hear
the songs that silence brings
Lost veiled memories echoing in the mist
Lost veiled memories...
Unraveling the mysteries of your dim kingdom
Lost veiled memories...
what if we rise?
what if we rise from the Underliving?
in the mist
Settle, rest, then move on further on
Don't be sad, unfurl

I'm blown away by your talent. Awesome work. Good job on all of it. We need more quality content like this.

Aw, thanks so much for stopping by and the encouraging words. I try my best. Music and Art is what I love doing, and I hope somehow that passion seeps through, it's really beautiful when it reaches others. Greetings from Spain! :)

I'm looking forward for moooooore 😍

Thank you so much. So far tomorrow I will be performing a little concert on Dlive from my studio. I want to share a bit more my side as illustrator as they usually work together with the music. I have received some lovely feedback today and I feel very encouraged to post more. :)

i listened to your song and interview on The Needle On Your Record Show and I am your new biggest fan!

Aww that is sweet, your "Witches" song was also very good. Thanks for the lovely encouragement.

Amazing my friends... this is what I call a labor of love and it shows what creative minds are capable if they stay focused...

Well you know I'm a fan of your work already... but gosh... this is crazy good...

<3

Thank you so much Meno, and as an unique rare event the elusive Mr @hedac appears full front selfie in the making of video. I had not watched it in a while and It was so funny to remember it. Including making FX with the steam of a hot potato... I will try to make sure when we go shooting to film some "making of" because it is genuinely so funny to see it afterwards. Thanks for the nice comment!

well, you already know I love this song of yours too, great to see more insight into your "artistic process"! :)

after alexpmorris used my track I suddenly got more views :P and listens and more succes with the lady's and stuff

If ever a post was worthy of being curied.....THIS! I know how much time you must have put into this. What an outstanding showcase of your talent. Your videos are like dreams come to life, art is like those from the famous masters and voice of an angel. I feel like I'm at the opera.

Such a treat to see your mysterious Hector there as well!

Well done, dear friend. ❤️ I hope it receives the praise and recognition that it deserves. If not, I know you carry on just the same. A truer artist I've yet to see top you.

Such a treat to see your mysterious Hector there as well!

hahah I didn't remember I was there in the video ! oops haha
now I can do DLIves or anything then HAHA ;)

You are the sweetest Serena, thanks

Really great to see the process Yidneth :D awesome!

Hot potatos make good smoke fx

i wish i could play at this level already, should just go with the forced pianolessons as a kid. Like I said you're style is very devine and unique. From an artist pov you have the package. have you ever tried to make up a language or are you do ing that already? why don't try something to make with a second singer on it, you can teach people that probably, would be cool though:)

I actually invented mynown language as a kid though I only have one song in it. Never had piano or music lessons, wish I had too. I only messed with a keyboard as a kid. Not really proficient at one instrument but love layering. I miss having a band wrapping me lol. I want to get a drone for @hedac (so many ideas). Gonna spend a little while focusing more on illustration too, thanks so much for your feedback.

Beautiful, I love this your voice as an instrument flowing through the imagery of the video. Its a great story and a wonderful collaboration of your many talents. It was great hearing you talk about it all on the discord chat that @freedomexists runs. Having worked in the TV and Film industry for 30 years I always enjoy seeing the behind the scenes videos and the creativity filling in where budget is limited. I LOVED the final product. 1st class I now want to see a whole fantasy animated series from this LOL.
Keep up the inspiring work. :D

Thank you so much. I am working now on "Fear no More" illustrated album but The Underliving still appear in it. Sharing more videos but yes I would like to do another maybe even fully animated. If only I had the patience haha. Saving for a small drone for my partner we could do so much out of it.

I'm sure you would get a lot of creative use from a drone, with all your imagination and skills.

I know, such a list of things we want to upgrade sigh to create but let us be patient.

This is fantastic @yidneth

already the video itself is a true gem, but including the making off in it makes it super special. I think if you are not into this kind of business you will have absolutely NO idea how much and what kind of work is in there.

Super super super cool!!

With humble resources it takes a lot of work and I think the trick might be not to overdo and be aware of your limitations. We have improved since I'd say, and I hope to save for a drone for aerial scenes, they are more affordable now... still the priority list have so many things going first. I believe when you have an idea, it takes love and time to bring it to life. It has a few years already, still I'm still proud of it. And this is the first time I shared some of the sketches. :)

Wow!
Firstly, the song itself has beautiful and unexpected chord changes, with great production.
Secondly, the music clip is really amazing! You guys did such a fantastic job on it! I mean REALLY fantastic job!
Thirdly, integrating your artwork into it like that and making all of those additions seem real and come to life.
lastly, (but not leastly), This blog post itself is epic and so wonderfully put together. I can definitely see now why it had to be in one blog post.
PS. Hector is a handsome and talented man...

Just a lot of wow! Thanks for sharing your process of making this amazing piece of work.

Hi Nathan, thanks for stopping by and for the lovely feedback. We do enjoy making videos. The second clip is sort of funny hahah the resources were indeed very humble hahah and yay you found Héctor hahaha, yes I agree the guy needs to move upfront a little bit more :) I'm working on it!
Thank you, that is my native little tropical island, it's a beautiful place, often cloaked in mist!

Yes, I’d assumed that you’d have had limited resources yet still managed to make such an incredible film clip. Very impressive!

Canary Islands. You know, I once had a man and his wife approach me after playing one of my gigs saying that he owned a music venue on the Canary Islands and wanted me to come and play shows there.
I’d love to go there one day and do that.
:)

Haha steemit concert there all of us, I vote for it.
We have wished for a small drone for some time now for the videos, still sometimes you can sort of magic with hot potatos lol haha. I have some very recent things to edit, we always have a camera ready. Somehow I feel though a while absorbed in painting is around the corner lol

Beautiful post, @yidneth !!! You are super talented and incredibly beautiful <3 I am constantly amazed by you~ <3 <3 <3

Aww thank you. I am plotting a new video that may involve lots of silhouettes. But need to finish some commissions first. Glad you liked it.
