Music Legends - Featured Artist Thin Lizzy
Formed in 1970, this Irish band were hugely unappreciated in relation to the other top rock and heavy metal bands of the 70’s such as Black Sabbath, Uriah Heep, Deep Purple and Led Zeppelin to name a few.
Nonetheless by the mid 70’s and the release of their “Fighting” album, Phil Lynott (Vocals, guitar), Bryan Robertson (Lead Guitar), Scott Gorham (Bassist) and drummer Brian Downey had become a very tight knit, extremely competent rock unit.
Lynott as a songwriter tended to base his lyrics around Irish traditions and the working class, very much like Bruce Springsteen and Bob Dylan were doing at the time. Shortly after the release of their Fighting album Thin Lizzy released the album Jailbreak, which was successful enough to ensure recording contracts for the next decade
Title song from Jailbreak
Their first hit single The Boys Are Back In Town also from Jailbreak was a tribute to the joys of working class men letting loose !! I never rated Thin Lizzy as a youngster as they were never heavy enough for me, but this track remains one of my all-time favourite listening tracks…
Crank it up loudddddd
Phil Lynott’s vocals worked very well with their style I reckon. He draws the listener in…
Thin Lizzy toured extensively and their core of hard core supporters grew, despite a slew of Lead Guitarists lining up alongside stalwart Scott Gorham. One of these was the guitar wizard Gary Moore on the album Black Rose. Title track below performed live, make sure to stick around for the drum solo
Albums were released at a steady rate but despite trying to repeat the “Boys” formula the same success eluded them, and by the mid-80’s they decided to call it a day. Lynott went solo but his use of drugs caught up with him and he died in 1986 at the age of 35.
Now in tribute to ‘the boys’ …pour yourself a wee dram of good Irish whiskey and listen to Whiskey in the Jar
Not quite music legends, nonetheless they certainly did carry weight in the 70’s.
Next up will be the hugely talented, and very difficult David Bowie.

One of the Best Things that they did was Phil and Gary on an Album with the Song " Out in the Fields" on it Brilliant. I loved Thin Lizzy, They showed the World what Harmony Guitar Solo's should sound like! No one did it better!
Good point about the harmony guitar solo's .... I came across that mentioned and should have worked it into the story..... thanks for that !!
