in #music6 years ago

If you wish to record your own songs or improve the sound quality of your podcasts, youtube videos etc... All you need is a basic home studio. Here you'll find 5 core elements to setup your home studio.

1 - Computer

Mac or PC, Laptop or Desktop, doesn't matter. A computer you've already own is enough to start.

Important Hardware

  • CPU - Intel Core i3 (equivalent or better)
  • Memory - 8Gb or more
  • HDD - (5400 RPM is ok but 7200 RPM is better, SSD? Of course, it's the best)

2 - Audio Interface

I don't recommend on board audio interface. Please prefer an external audio interface. USB, Firewire, Thunderbolt is not very important. Just be sure that your computer have that connection port.

Basic Specs To Check

  • Bit Depth/Sample Rate should be minimum 24Bit/44.1kHz
  • Input (Preamp) quantity and type (combo inputs -XLR/TS are available on most interfaces)
  • Phantom power support (+48V)

Of course you can prefer higher sample rate such as 48k,96k or 192kHz.

Bang For Buck Audio Interfaces

  • Roland Rubix 24
  • Focusrite Scarlett 2i2
  • Steinberg UR 22

If you have more budget, you may check Universal Audio or RME.

3 - Microphone

Condenser or dynamic mic, both will be ok. But I strongly recommend condenser mic.

Bang For Buck Condenser Mics - MXL 990, Rode NT1, NT1A or for less budget you should check Behringer or Samson.

4 - DAW (Digital Audio Workstation)

We need a good software to record and process our audio right? DAW is the software that records and process the audio.
Nowadays most audio interfaces coming with a free copy of a DAW.

If you want more, you should check Pro Tools, Logic (only mac), Studio One, Cubase, Reaper, Ableton Live etc.

5 - Pair of Headphones or Reference Monitors

You need to listen while you're recording yourself or while mixing the audio. So if you are limited on budget, pair of closed-back headphones will be enough to start. If you have enough budget to cover both, it's much better.

Recommended Headphones For Beginners

Sony MDR-7506, Audio Technica ATH M20X, M40X or M50X is better, Sennheiser HD 280 Pro, Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro

Recommended Reference Monitors For Beginners

Please consider your room size. For small rooms 5", medium 6" - 7", bigger rooms 8" speaker models will be fit.

Yamaha HS series, Focal Alpha Series or KRK Rookit series are good for beginners or even intermediates.

I tried to keep it short, but if you have any questions or requests to add more information, please let me know in the comments section. Also please don't forget to upvote and follow for more. Thanks for reading, see you guys...
