[MUSIC REVIEW] Bobby Fuller Died For Your Sins (2017) by Chuck Prophet

in #music8 years ago (edited)

For unfathomable reasons some artists fly a bit under the radar. One example is Chuck Prophet who's been releasing a long series of albums since his debut in the eighties. Prophet's feel for melodies are strong and somehow he seems to just get better and better with the years. The basis is the kind of luxury garage rock with bright and floral undertones and Prophet's nasal and talky type of vocals are reminiscent of a cross between Jonathan Richman and early Lou Reed, all accompanied by Kinks-style power chords.

On his latest album "Bobby Fuller died for your sins" the attitude is razor-sharp, but with an abundance of humor the songs take place somewhere in the borderland between happiness and tragedy. Bobby Fuller was a rock singer who died under mysterious circumstances in 1966 at age 23 and the star of the ultimate rock'n'roll feel-bad story. Some of the songs seem to be autobiographical, while others are documentary, as the song about Alex Nieto who was shot dead by police in San Francisco in 2014. "Bad Year for Rock and Roll" is a homage to all the stars who passed away last year, not least David Bowie. A strong set of songs, committed performances and an extraordinary coolness makes for a really great album. Have your radars set to detect Chuck Prophet in the future, it's really worth it!

Thank you, appreciate it!

I instantly recognize what you mean when you talk about ear for melody ... or hooks maybe rather ;-) Not far from Petty ... good stuff, need to check him out ... resteeming

The guitar hooks in that title track is just awesome :-)

Thanks man! Yeah, I can definitely hear some Tom Petty in there as well! Also check out his old band Green on Red:

Prefer solo :-)
