Aurora - I Went Too Far lyric analysis

in #music5 years ago

This is my interpretation of this song and the lyrics. I like this song, it's deep and has a powerful message. I will first tell my take of the song along with the lyrics. At the end I will tell what the singer and writer of this song think, although I will start with my interpretation.

This song was released a while ago, it's not new, but it's worth writing about.

I went too far when I was begging on my knees
Begging for your arms, for you to hold them around me

We go too far when we're desperate. Sometimes when we try to justify our actions, we'll say that we were desperate. The protagonist in this song is begging for love. She feels neglected and just a need for affection and love.

I went too far and kissed the ground beneath your feet
Waiting for your love, waiting for our eyes to meet

This might mean that the protagonist was so desperate that she did anything to get his attention and praised everything he did. By kissing the ground beneath his feet, she means she let herself get obsessed and captivated by him. To the degree that she'll do almost anything for him and didn't realize or care that she went too far, at lease then. Now in the future she'd looking at it with regret, but understands why she did that and still struggles with it.
She day dreams about receiving his love, their eyes will meet, and everything will be perfect like a fairytale.

Crying; give me some love, give me some love and hold me
Give me some love and hold me tight
Oh, give me some love, give me some love and hold me
Give me some love and hold me tight.

She desperately yearns for his love and to be held. The protagonist's strange, strange in the way she can't describe why she wants it so badly or why it's changing her so much, desire is so strong that she feels like crying this and probably mentally says it a lot.

I went too far when I was begging on my knees
When I cut my hands, so you could stand and watch me bleed

She experiences the need for his affection so greatly, she feels as if she's on her knees pleading for it. She craves him and his love, so much, to the point that she lets him see her wounds and everything that painful or making her worry. She's letting him see her bleed in hopes that it would make him more sympathetic towards her or trust her.

I went too far and kissed the ground beneath your feet
Standing in my blood, it was a taste of bittersweet

The memory of her showing him her pains is bittersweet, she was happy to share it with him, but she was sad and looks at it with regret.

Crying; give me some love, give me some love and hold me
Give me some love and hold me tight
Oh, give me some love, give me some love and hold me
Give me some love and hold me tight.

Why can't I turn around and walk away?
Go back in time

She wants to not do this anymore and be herself, to be independent and strong, but she can't. Something inside herself is holding her back that she's unable to defeat. She wants to scream "Why can't I turn around and walk away?"

I have to turn around and walk away
I couldn't stay, I had to walk away

In the music video, she reaches for water. This could show that she wants to be clean and be cleansed of what she did in the past so she can move on.

I'm left behind with an empty hole
And everything I am is gone
I try to reach for another soul
So I can feel whole

She knew she couldn't stay, she was losing so much time and it wouldn't have worked. She managed to walked away, but she lost herself chasing after him and feels empty. She finds someone else and starts chasing after him to fill the hole in her that grew deeper chasing the last guy. She starts to do it all over again, and after she managed to walk away from the last person, the cycle continues and she's still stuck.

Oh, give me some love
Oh, give me some love

Oh, give me some love, give me some love and hold me
Give me some love and hold me tight
Oh, give me some love, give me some love and hold me
Give me some love and hold me tight

Why can't I turn around and walk away?
Go back in time
I'll have to turn around and walk away
I couldn't stay, I had to walk away

She's trapped, she continues to want another man's love and at the same time desires to be free. These two wishes pull her two separate ways and one prevents the other from happening. The that one want inside of her stops her from being released and she's imprisoned by her own wants.

Below is a Youtuber explaining what he claims Aurora's take on this song is.

Adam Godzilla- I went to Aurora's concert recently and she said the meaning of this song is the sort of neediness that we feel when we see a social group that we want to be a part of. Aurora said when she was nine, she saw people in her school that she wanted to be friends with. But in doing so, she lost a part of who she was. Therefore, she went too far, trying to get the 'love' from these people. She says this song goes out to anyone who's experienced being made 'small' by others, whether in the workplace, in school, or otherwise.

This is a very real problem that Aurora speaks of. We all want to be accepted, but sometimes we will try to enter groups that aren't the best for us and lose ourselves.

In the music video, there are two Auroras. One is wearing white and climbing up the ladder to the clouds. The one wearing black started in a dark cave and is climbing up the ladder to water. Their paths intersect, creating an Aurora yin yang.

As I said earlier, Aurora, the one in black, holds her hand out to touch water, to become pure. The fact that she's wearing black makes this theory more likely.

Someone in the comments of the video noticed the yin yang like I did, he or she believed that the dark Aurora represented the past and the light Aurora represented the future when she had gotten over it and is pure again.

mouna3242 - I see a ying and yang symbolism here as the theme for the video. The white Aurora represents the future, hope and positiveness as she is claiming upward towards the sky. Whilst the other Aurora in black below represents the past, negativity and pain, as she climbs downwards towards the sea. Both sides need to exist to make something whole.

I thought something similar, but the opposite. I think that the white Aurora is the past, innocent and pure, she believes that everything's good. The past Aurora is going to climb up the ladder to the clouds that she believes will make her happy and is somewhere she wants to be. And the black Aurora is the future, she's wiser, scarred, and full of pain. She sees all the bad things in the world and her eyes are opened up to it. She knows that behind the clouds that seem so innocent, is a dark cave that she gained her scars and never wants to return to.

She climbs towards the water because she's desperate to become clean. To wash herself of her pain, bruises, and negativity. She's not easy to fool and has learned a lot, but she lacks the special hope and belief that the world is good, that a child would have, that is in the white Aurora.
