The basic rhythmic feeling of a piece is determined by the meter, i.e. the time signature. We distinguish between two different types: Binary and ternary meters. The terms come from the Greek and mean as much as two or three parts. The subdivision refers to the note values that are smaller than one beat, i.e. the eighth notes. The simplest binary time signature is the relatively rare 1/4 beat. It contains exactly one basic element of binary meters: a beat divided into two eighths. For this reason, the 1/4 bar is called simple binary.
The 4/4 bar that many of you know is composed of four 1/4 bars, so it contains four times the basic binary element. Therefore, the 4/4 beat is called composite binary.
