Sounds: Musings, Freedom from The Material, and Music as Joyful Medicine

in #music5 years ago

For those of you that know me, I love my music and I love writing about it each week and how it's connected to my life, my memories, the present moment. It's just fun - I dont know how many of you listen to the songs or even read those posts, but that's fine - it's just a little moment in the week for me where I sit down and intentionally listen to some tunes and chill out. It's the least pressure to write a post all week.

Today, I realised, the content of the post relates to the tribes I'm in. How to unintentionally combine #ecotrain, #naturalmedicine, #sundaysounds, #musicmonday, #homesteaderscoop and #freedomtribe all in one post? Sort out your CD collection.

Music Monday & Sunday Sounds

For those not in the know, CD's were a means of storing music that were meant to replace vinyl, and last forever, except they didn't, coz they got scratched, and vinyl sounded better, and mp3's happened, and then vinyl came back.... woot. Having fun sorting out which ones I really wanna chuck - these have nostalgia value!! Forgot all about this track.

It was a bit of a blast going through them. Some old classics that I haven't heard in years - US3 Hand on the Torch, Dub Bangra, Head Mix Collective, some ska/punk mixs, and this one - which is a story in and of itself.

So there I was, trying to sort out my seed collection, and wondering where to put them. So many of them are out of date - wonder if they are still viable? Smiling at the seeds from @sagescrub still. Nothing like listening to tunes whilst you are SORTING stuff.

This one reminds me of sitting on a beach in Thailand, dreaming of this guy I had just met, who is now my husband of 16 years and is in the shed trying to make the broken CD player work so he can play all these in the shed.

Ecotrain

Have you seen their Abundance challenge? Talk about an abundance of things - all these CD's that are just taking up space. What a brilliant repurpose idea - putting the CD's in this CD album! Because I sure as hell don't play all those burnt CD's anymore, and I dont even have a CD player! Pretty happy with this idea.

FreedomTribe

I need to be free of all these memories and crap. They're just taking up space. I think there's maybe 5 I wanna keep as they are truly rare because they're compilations made by friends, but all the rest I can find online. Seriously. Material possessions just bog you down. Now..how else can I lighten my load? Thinking of the open road, and a lot of these tunes stored on Spotify or the like, and listening to them as the road falls behind.

Natural Medicine

Because, my Dad just found out that his cancer is incurable. He came round and told us yesterday. He's happy enough. Could have a year, could have 5. Who knows. He's living until he's not. God I'm going to miss listening to music with him. There's about twenty CD's in this collection that were sent to me by Dad when I lived in the UK. Still, he lives in my heart not on a plastic disc. One day, the best medicine for my grief is to listen to the music he loved and smile. He bought a new mal (surfboard) the other day - it'll be mine when he dies, but he insists Mum keeps the guitars hanging on the wall because otherwise there will be no soul to the back room, and besides, his grandsons can always visit and play guitar. Fuck. My heart is breaking in a million pieces. But, music brings you joy, and that's a pretty awesome natural medicine for the soul.

What are you listening to this week?

Have you kept or chucked your CD's?

Now what do I do with this stack of rubbish I no longer have use for?

I always enjoy your dj mixes!

Yay to J. for saving the CD's! :) I still have a huge binder of CD's and play them in the greenhouse because ... I am so retro that I still have a boom box!

For the old computer CD's I tie them to string and hang them in the garden to keep the birds from eating the freshly planted seeds. I am not convinced it works but they look all cool and rainbow-ish when the sun hits them.

They are so pretty! He couldn't get the boombox (lol) to work, but I'm sure we can pick one up from a charity shop (or op shop as we call them here!). I'm glad someone reads and enjoys my DJ mixes (lol, DJ). Funny, about ten years ago when Jamie came to this area, he made the mistake of telling kids he used to be a DJ. Kids still call him DJ Saunders and beg for him to DJ for him - he says he will, if they get straight A's, so he's been safe so far. I'm not sure they could handle him anyway :P

haha... a very cool and FUN post, my dear. I haven't had CD's in my world for at least 10 years!! I like to travel lite and Asia is so much more digital, it would seem. The seed storage in the old CD case? LOVE it. Here in Thailand old CDs are often used ad drink coasters in bars, and as reflectors on motorbikes. I'm listening to less an less music, lately, and enjoying the birdsong and silence and watching my thoughts go by. This generally HORRIFIES some people, who need to be surrounded by sound and input all the time, but I'm liking the different music.... :) Happy Monday - and wishing you a delightful week on Steem.

Oh definitely enjoy silence too. Right now, the murmur and tic tic tic of fire going in burner, frogs and gentle rain. As beautiful music as anything else I share when I feel like singing and grooving instead of sitting and musing... sounds like Thais make good use of CDS! I've seen them set in a resin table before... that's pretty groovy, though I doubt my burnt cds with scrawl make good art lol.

In our country people hang CD on trees to scare away birds :) I also have tons of disks, but I rarely listen to them, more often I listen music on computer or smartphone (in mp3)

I know right? Me too. I'm not sure our big Aussie birds would be scared by them ha ha!!! Where do you live??

Posted using Partiko Android

In Russia. Our birds are also not particularly afraid, but people hang cds

Haha... so funny, birds must think we are crazy!!

@likedeeler... might be a CD in here or two you relate to...

You've been visited by @sagescrub from Homesteaders Co-op.

A seed packet organizer... Nice repurposing!! Like @astrizak says, I have seen people hang them from fruit trees along with tinsel. I don;t know how effective that is because the birds still get in there, but it probably helps a bit. I wonder if a CD brick would be useful like @trucklife-family's plastic bricks.

You got a spindle with burnt CD's? Isn't that technically MP3's? ;>)

When I moved my last things from The Netherlands to Portugal, early January, I think I got rid of all my cd's but I'm not 100% sure about this. I hadn't had a working CD-player in about a decade and merely listen(ed) to digital music or vinyl.

Since January I own a movie projector and I bought a DVD-player somewhat later, as I still couldn't throw out all movies I collected in the early 2000s. I even bought a secondhand VCR in Portugal, as I decided to keep a suitcase with movies on VHS.

I might like minimalism but memories, memories and I might wanna let go of NETFLIX haha. I am loving Spotify though, only started using it recently.

xx

P.S. I feel you on your dad. Not sure if I told you that mine heard last year that he has a progressive form of long fibrosis. He's using a new kind of medicine that might prolong his life with 5-10 years ( he's almost 69 ) but it can also be over in a couple of years. As he's already a heart patient and on anti-depressiva, he's pretty fragile. Nevertheless, my parents plan to visit me and my twin sister in Portugal somewhere next month. I can't wait :>)
