Artist Rising: Flamingosis samples Jazz and Soul Music to Perfection
It was a Friday night and I just drove from LA to Long Beach to party at my friend Brook's house. Me and him are the friends out of the group that love smoking hookah so I brought mine down to puff on while we drank. As I got lightheaded and lost my balance from the hookah Brook pulled up the song I now know as "Ooh Baby" and I was like Duuuuuuuuuuude....who is this you're playing right now??
He said "Dude....FlaminGOsis", emphasis on the "Go" that I distinctly recall.
I thanked him for introducing me, because I knew I was about to get obsessed.
I shared a song by Flamingosis in my Introduction Post post but I'm expanding on him here. I couldn't be more excited about this guy and have been playing him for just about everyone I know. I'm starting to see this East coast beatmaker appear in small lettering in festival lineups, but it's only a matter of time until they increase that font.

His style utilizes easygoing, rhythmic hip hop beats intertwined with what I view as genius sampling taken from the Motown and Jazz eras. He's an amazing bridge from the old school to the new, and even from a hip hop crowd to an electronic music one that I could see being universally beloved. He has a few albums on Spotify but I believe his most recent one titled "A Groovy Thing" is through bandcamp, which you can find here. My personal favorites from the new one are "Don't Lose The Feeling" and "Flute Salad".
One song that resonated with me is "A Beautiful Soul" from the album Pleasure Palatte. He first lays out a groovin sample-laced hip hop beat then almost a minute into the song the man seamlessly slips in the sound effect of Mario jumping from Super Mario World!! He doesn't stop with the theme there, because at the drop a few seconds later he brings in an instrument reminiscent of The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time, Malon singing from Lon Lon Ranch! Both of those added elements create an incredible vibe for the song. Listen for yourself below.
He also struck a nerve with people when he sampled Hey Arnold in the blissful, relaxing track "Football Head". It's his top song on Spotify and has a few million hits on Youtube. He's one of my favorite artists of the modern era and his music fits into variety of different situations. There's something oddly satisfying about eating ramen and listening to him.
