“Dancing With Myself”  is a fine song with a danceable rhythm and an infectious melody. Decent lyrics, too. Which all makes it a bit of a surprise, considering that it came from Billy Idol. 

The Billy Joel of Punk (Without the Piano)

Given that this minor masterpiece was preceded by a few years’ worth of truly mediocre music, and followed by a few decades of more and increasingly mediocre tunes, Billy Idol can be said to be “the Billy Joel of punk.”  (see my previous post on Billy Joel’s "Piano Man" )

The Stranger, The Rebel, The Plague

In the case of Billy Joel, certain people might argue that some of his other songs – such as “The Stranger”  and that song in which he mentions a Cadillac …. ack!  – were on par with “Piano Man.”  But one would lose that argument. Those other songs are comparatively mediocre, at best.    

The same goes for such Billy Idol songs as “Rebel Yell”  and “White Wedding,”  which have plagued the pop community for decades now.

Apart from “Piano Man”  and “Dancing With Myself”, there’s no evidence or popular opinion to support any other spurious claims to greatness.    

The original version of “Dancing With Myself”  was recorded by Idol’s first band, Generation X (a previous incarnation of Gen X), but that unremarkable version is lost to history.

And after Gen X split up, Idol recorded a solo remix of the song, which also pales in comparison to this Gen X version. (See 2nd YouTube link below ... but don't bother clicking on it.)     _{(Image source)}
