“Everybody Hurts” by R.E.M. – SteemitCentral Lyrics Challenge – Day 46 / 60
“Sometimes, everything is wrong, Now it's time to sing along”
song ~ “Everybody Hurts”
artist ~ R.E.M.
When the day is long
And the night, the night is yours alone
When you're sure you've had enough
Of this life, well hang on
Don't let yourself go
'Cause everybody cries
And everybody hurts sometimes
Sometimes everything is wrong
Now it's time to sing along
When your day is night alone (Hold on)
If you feel like letting go (Hold on)
If you think you've had too much
Of this life, well hang on
'Cause everybody hurts
Take comfort in your friends
Everybody hurts
Don't throw your hand, oh no
Don't throw your hand
If you feel like you're alone
No, no, no, you are not alone
If you're on your own in this life
The days and nights are long
When you think you've had too much of this life to hang on
Well, everybody hurts sometimes
Everybody cries
And everybody hurts sometimes
And everybody hurts sometimes
So hold on, hold on
Hold on, hold on, hold on, hold on, hold on, hold on
Everybody hurts
No, no, no, no, you are not alone (Image source)
Comments
Written primarily by R.E.M. drummer Bill Berry, the lyrics of this song are “straightforward” and nothing profound – apart from the soothing manner in which they express sympathy and compassion for the common person.
Music for Everybody
According to guitarist Peter Buck, the reason the that the lyrics were “direct” was because the song was “aimed at teenagers.” Ironically, that made this song accessible to all, including older college students and even adults.
Everybody Helps
The song has been used by the UK emotional support service The Samaritans to attract those who are in need of assistance. Also, in 2010, it was used in a campaign to raise funds for victims of the Haitian earthquake. Indeed, everybody hurts, and the best response to that is to encourage everybody to help and comfort those who are suffering, and to tell them that “you are not alone.” (Image source)R.E.M. – "Everybody Hurts" (Right-click to hear on YouTube)
