The lyrics to this classic song, from the 1960s band The Yardbirds, were penned by Graham Gouldman, one of the greatest songwriters of his time. 

No love lost, only a lost lover

The bluesy lyrics are basically a plea to a lover. But the song is not simply a tale of “lost love.”  Although the man has lost his lover, his love remains. In fact, he still has a “heart full”  of soul and love. 

A much higher love

While this may be a love song, the love it speaks of is not the mushy emotional “heart-felt”  love of most songs. This love is a higher love, a love that is elevated beyond the heart, to the level of the soul.

And it’s very likely that his “heart full of soul”  will nurture a transcendent love.      _{(Image source)}
