The wonderful title of this classic song says it all. The simple but beautiful lyrics express the writer’s search for love.

In some ways, it’s a search for external love, but ultimately, it’s about finding love within, a love that can be lived and a love that can be expressed.  

Love to give

The writer states right from the start that he “wants to give.” Immediately thereafter, however, he laments that “It’s these expressions I never give.” While he truly wants to give and to love, he realizes that he does not manage to do so.  

Mining for a pure heart of gold

Even as he grows older, he’s still “mining for a heart of gold.” But, interestingly, he never mentions any object of his love.    

He knows that his love must come from within. He understand that if he mines deep enough – if he searches deep enough into his own heart – he will find his pure “heart of gold.”
