“As I walk on, Through troubled times, My spirit gets so downhearted sometimes”

song ~ “(What’s so Funny ‘Bout) Peace, Love, and Understanding”

artist ~ Elvis Costello and The Attractions

As I walk through this wicked world
Searchin' for light in the darkness of insanity
I ask myself "Is all hope lost?
Is there only pain and hatred and misery?"

And each time I feel like this inside
There's one thing I wanna know
What's so funny 'bout peace love & understanding? Ohhhh
What's so funny 'bout peace love & understanding?

As I walk on
Through troubled times
My spirit gets so downhearted sometimes
So where are the strong
And who are the trusted?
And where is the harmony?
Sweet harmony.

'Cause each time I feel it slippin' away, it just makes me wanna cry
What's so funny 'bout peace love & understanding? Ohhhh
What's so funny 'bout peace love & understanding?

So where are the strong?
And who are the trusted?
And where is the harmony?
Sweet harmony.

'Cause each time I feel it slippin' away, it just makes me wanna cry
What's so funny 'bout peace love & understanding? Ohhhh
What's so funny 'bout peace love & understanding? Ohhhh

These stirring and profound lyrics were written by Nick Lowe, who recorded the song with his band Brinsley Schwarz in 1974.

From “B” to “AAA” rating

In 1978, Elvis Costello recorded a version, which was produced by Lowe himself, and released it as the B-side of a single. When this song became a hit, it was added as the final track to Costello’s next album, Armed Forces.

Loud and resounding

Over the years, this powerful and energetic song has appeared on various Elvis compilations, including several live albums. It has also been covered by numerous and various other artists.

Way back in the summer of 1981, near the end of a day-long, multi-band, outdoor concert near Toronto, we heard Elvis and The Attractions perform this song – live, loud, resoundingly, and inspiringly. It was definitely one of the highlights of that memorable day of great music.

According to Rolling Stone magazine, this version is ranked number 284 on the list of best songs of all time. On my personal list, it's much higher.     (Image source)
