A unique fusion. A smooth, fluid mix of various genres.

Khruangbin – “Evan Finds The Third Room”

“Evan Finds The Third Room” (2018)

Like most of Khruangbin’s music, their song “Evan Finds the Third Room”  is a smooth, fluid mix of various genres. The unique fusion makes for music that is both listenable and danceable.

The seemingly enigmatic lyrics to “Evan Finds the Third Room”  are in fact not cryptic, nor even meaningful. The band has stated that the lyrics to this song are nothing more than a “pile of inside jokes” words and phrases that they had just thrown together. They had intended to eventually change the lyrics, but never got around to it.

Dancing in the Streets … of China

For the video, they “found the happiest woman in China,”  according to director Josh King, and let her have fun as the camera rolled. Compared to the tortured, over-choreographed prancing seen in most music videos, her lively dance steps show that she is truly happy and truly having fun.

Kruangbin

The band Khruangbin hails from Texas, but its influences come from far beyond the borders of that state. Its music aint southern rock, it aint country, and it sure aint typical Texan. Its sound is a pleasant blend of soul, dub, and funk, with a hint of psychedelia.

In 2004, guitarist Mark Speer met drummer Donald "DJ" Johnson Jr. while both were playing in a gospel band at a church in Houston (where DJ played organ). In 2007, Speer met bassist Laura Lee when they toured with the same bands. They found that they shared interests in middle eastern music and architecture.

(Hmmm, maybe there is some connection between music and architecture.)    (Image source)

Songs from a Barn

They began rehearsing in a barn in the small Texan town of Burton. The band continues to record its music in that barn.

What’s in a Name?

The word “khruangbin”  means “airplane” in Thai. Laura Lee chose the name before the band’s first gig, simply because it was one of her favorite words in the Thai language.

In trying to categorize the band’s sound, some critics have labelled it “Thai funk.”  The band has shunned such labels. And anyway, what does a word meaning “airplane”  have to do with Thai music, or any music? It’s just a name. An airplane by any other name will fly, or make noise, or make music, or whatever.

That got me really laughing.

The lyrics of this song is quite funny. This is the third room, press Steem. Lol

Thanks for sharing.

Glad you enjoyed it. I found the unorthodox vid – with an dancing elderly lady, gently hopping and bopping thru the streets – very funny and interesting.

By the way, did you have any trouble opening the link to this post?

I have had major issues with it, and just hope that it's only my account, and only this one post.

I did not have any issue opening this post but I did HAVE a major issue trying to comment. I made these comments using the @esteemapp after trying unsuccessfully for over 24 hours. Unfortunately, I can't say what exactly went wrong.

OK, thanks for trying and striving. I can open only by first opening a "Comment." But then, I cannot open the "Edit" function.

I was afraid something horrible had happened, just as when I uploaded the BB post. But whatever is happening with this post seems not to affect any other of my posts, so I aint gonna worry about it.

Cheers!

UPDATE! NEWS FLASH! After waiting about 5 mins, the "edit" function did open, and I was able to make a minor change to the post. Now, I'm leaving it ... for good!

I'm happy to hear this. At least, the storm is now over and we should now expect sunset, or a silver lining, or whatever - as long as it is good.

Really a uniquely funny song... I do love her shoes though!
