Tash Sultana – “Jungle”
“Jungle” (2016)
Tash recorded this live version of her song “Jungle” entirely on her own, in her bedroom.
Taking Captive
Even though this is truly a home-made, do-it-yourself version, the performance is captivating, the musicianship is excellent, and the sound is magnificent. In a concert hall, this would sound great. The fact that it sounds superb coming from her bedroom says a lot about her talent and her musical gifts.
Hot Peaks
Subsequent to this recording, “Jungle” appeared on Tash’s debut EP in 2017. It was also released as a single, which peaked at Number 39 in both Australia and the US. On the Triple J Hottest 100 for 2016, “Jungle” was ranked Number 3. (Image source)Tash Sultana
Tash Sultana is a musician from Melbourne, Australia. She started out by busking and playing at open-mic nights.
(She did the latter while underage and using a fake ID. That alone gets her the “Music to Your Ears” seal of approval.)
One is Plentiful
Tash is a multi-instrumentalist, and has mastered over a dozen instruments. She has been described as a “1-person powerhouse.”
While she gets occasional help from back-up musicians, she can easily get by very well without their help. Using just her voice, her guitar, a floor-ful of pedals, and a few other devices, she creates a hypnotic tsunami of sonic ecstasy.By 2016, Tash’s YouTube videos had been viewed millions of times. In September 2016, she released her debut EP. In 2017, she embarked on a world tour, which was sold out.
Over 2017–18, Tash received 10 nominations from Austalia’s ARIA Music Awards. Her 2018 album “Flow State” received the ARIA Award for “Blues and Roots Album of The Year.” (Image source)They are the Chosen One
note – In terms of gender identity, Tash identifies as non-binary, and uses the singular “they” as the pronoun referring to herself. While I totally respect her choice, I – as a writer striving for clarity – have realized that such usage can be very confusing. Therefore, I’ve employed the traditional pronouns “she” and “her.” I hope Tash does not mind too much.) I see the way you moveIt's so fluid
Be here by my side
Got nothing to hide Know that you're hurting
I see the tears behind those eyes
And I can't wipe them clear
Your love was like gold to me But you hold me closer to the light
Wouldn't find the bullet inside
Unless you magnified
But you throw me into the deep end
Expect me to know how to swim
And I, I put my faith inside my hands
Cause I will be just fine Welcome to the jungle
Are you gonna dance with me?
Welcome to the jungle
You got to close your eyes and see
Welcome to the jungle
Are you gonna dance with me?
Well, no nah
Well, no nah Sitting tight with my black jeans on
And I'm paralysed, make your way toward the sun
Got the palest soul you ever seen, oh darling
You mightn't be the one
Sitting tight with my curly hair
Making your way with that sheepish stare
Said are you real do you feel are you there? Ashes to ashes
And the embers I blaze
Oh, I gotta rise amongst you, though
And I think about your face every day
But you pull me closer to the light
You wouldn't find the bullets inside
Only if you magnified Welcome to the jungle
Are you gonna dance with me?
Welcome to the jungle
You got to close your eyes and see
Welcome to the jungle
Are you gonna dance with me?
