The Dead South – “In Hell I'll Be in Good Company”

“In Hell I'll Be in Good Company” (2014)

First appearing on The Dead South’s 2014 debut album, the song “In Hell I’ll Be in Good Company”  was also released as a single. But it was the 2017 release of the accompanying video that led to the band’s breakthrough.

Hell, He’ll be With Friends

While the song’s subject matter – that is, misery and murder – might give it a blues flavor, the lively melody and upbeat rhythms are pure folk.

It matters little that the protagonist is a murderer. And it matters less that he’s on his way to hell. He’s now free. And when he gets to hell, he’ll still be free, and surrounded by friends.    (Image source)

The Dead South

The Dead South is a folk / bluegrass group from Regina, Canada. The band was formed after 2 of its current members abandoned their alternative grunge band, with the goal of founding a “rockin' stompin' bluegrass band."

Lovin,’ Killin,’ etc

Sputnik Music has pointed out that the band’s songs are typically about “lovin', cheatin', killin' and drinkin’.”  And while they are essentially a string band, their whistling, humming, clapping, stomping, and finger-snapping add fuller and richer dimensions.

On Exclaim.ca, the music reviewer Sarah Murphy praised The Dead South from bringing “a fresh perspective to classic genres.”    (Image source)

Good Roots

The Dead South was awarded the 2018 Juno Award for “Best Traditional Roots Album,”  for the 2016 LP “Illusion and Doubt.”

In 2019, it was named “Group of the Year”  at the Canadian Independent Music Awards.

Dead love couldn't go no further
Proud of and disgusted by her
Push, shove, a little bruised and battered
Oh Lord, I ain't coming home with you

My life's a bit more colder
Dead wife, is what I told her
Brass knife sinks into my shoulder
Oh babe don't know what I'm gonna do

I see my red head, messed bed, tear shed, queen bee
My squeeze
The stage it smells, tells, hell's bells, miss-spells
Knocks me on my knees
It didn't hurt, flirt, blood squirt, stuffed shirt
Hang me on a tree
After I count down, three rounds
In hell, I'll be in good company

Dead love couldn't go no further
Proud of and disgusted by her
Push, shove, a little bruised and battered
Oh Lord I ain't coming home with you

My life's a bit more colder
Dead wife, is what I told her
Brass knife sinks into my shoulder
Oh babe, don't know what I'm gonna do

I see my red head, messed bed, tear shed, queen bee
My squeeze
The stage it smells, tells, hell's bells, misspells
Knocks me on my knees
It didn't hurt, flirt, blood squirt, stuffed shirt
Hang me on a tree
After I count down, three rounds
In hell, I'll be in good company
In hell, I'll be in good company

Hi @majes.tytyty
IF this musical group I heard it last year. Really, they came a long way or at least here in Venezuela it was heard.
You are quite right, when they use other resources such as their whistling, humming, clapping, stomping, and finger-snapping add fuller and richer dimensions.
They give another level to their music, the lyrics are very controversial. but it's also very I don't know how to say it, "sticky"

It's interesting that your heard the band there in Venezuela. Then again, I know you have eclectic tastes in music, so it could be that your "found" the music on your own musical journey.

The lyrics might seem controversial, but, as in all art, we have to realize that the artists are being creative, and chances are that what they are saying is not a factual reflection of what they think or believe. And as for music, the "voice" of the musicians might not be their own voice, but the voice of a character.
Some may say that they would not be speaking truthfully, but I'd say that the effective expression of the voice of a character makes the message MORE TRUE.
Hope this song and other ones "stick" with you. :-)

The title of this song is not only catchy but hilarious to an irreligious mind. I'm still wondering how the band came up with the title - In hell I will be in good company.

Thanks for sharing.

I think he's implying that he killed his wife because she was such horrible company. So, anything in hell will be much better than the "torture" that he suffered when he was with his wife.

And of course, the song is meant to be humorous, so be sure not to take it too seriously. :-)

Hahahaha thanks for the additional clarifications. And thanks for sharing.

Lovely group, liked them and the song.
