Eye on Artists: Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band

in #music6 years ago

One of Frank Zappa's friends going back to high school was Captain Beefheart, they both were some eccentric unique sounding artists. One of their collaborations that is pretty good is "Willie the Pimp"

Both Zappa and Beefheart called out consumerist culture, one of Beefhearts most direct songs was "Plastic Factory."

Beefheart had a deep voice, that I think I read some where he may have busted a mic with his voice at some point. One cool videos of his was "Click Clack,"

A cool video of Beefhear and his Magic Band is "Electricity" at Canne's toward the end of the 60s. I'd love to play Cannes someday.

" Upon The My O My" is a great video from a famous tv show, "Old Grey Whistle Test" from the mid 70s, obviously got Beefhearts scratchy deep voice here.

The film "The Big Lebowski" has this song in it, it's a cool song about a woman with amazing blue eyes. All around Beefheart who later got into painting before passing away a few years ago is a noteworthy and unique artist of rock and roll.

One of my favorite Beefheart tunes is "Sure 'nuff ''n Yes I do" like Zappa lots of the text has a unique spelling, This song has got some great slide guitar and harmonica also at Cannes in 68. Looks like it was a great day, would have been cool to be parting there.

beep beep you seem communist

It's still such a shame that Frank Zappa had to pass away so soon. At the end of his life he was writing some of the most amazing ( and most crazy is should add) pieces of music I can imagine really.
What would have been next?

yea,he was a great composer, so much stuff out there can't imagine what a few more years would have got us.

Damn! So many of these songs are so palatable, I guess I'm only really familiar with Trout Mask Replica which just slightly toes over my tolerance for weirdness (which I think is pretty large) but these sound more like classic rock tom waits, thanks for sharing, probably would have never delved deeper into him otherwise!

yea, I never got too big into any artists, but these are some good ones, but some are less memorable/enjoyable to hear

I've been getting way into Beefheart lately and posting about it on Steemit .. check out my blog : )

nice, I imagine you like his paintings?

I like his paintings but I can also see that he very shrewdly switched to an art career capitalizing on his fame as a underground poet/songwriter at exactly the time when he had been diagnosed with MS and knew he had to go into seclusion. I think his greater talent was for songwriting and singing/music but I do like the sense of desert landscapes in his painting. He was supported by Michael Werner gallery and his work is very similar to the German Neo-Expressionist painters that Michael Werner was showing.

didn't know about MS, sounds interesting, hit me up "thefatkat" on discord if you ever want resteems for your paintings/help finding your audience.
