Celebrating NZ music throughout May: 14 - Antagonist A.D / Jordan Luck / Dance Exponents / The Exponents / Fur Patrol

in #music7 years ago

I didn’t know what I felt like listening to today, so thought I’d see what the Video of the Day was, on the NZ music Month website. Wish I hadn’t.

Featured on the NZ Music Month website today was…

… Antagonist A.D with “No Justice”. Sorry, folks, that’s just too heavy for this old lady. I checked out a couple of their other songs to see if I liked them better, but frankly, they just made me feel a bit sick. I had to look it up to even know what to call their genre – metalcore, apparently. They’ve been around since 2005, so if you want more, there’s heaps out there. But you’re on your own.

I had to go back to the 80’s to recover my equilibrium, and decided on a bit of Jordan Luck. He was one of the founders of the Dance Exponents in 1981, which then became The Exponents, and he now performs as the Jordan Luck band.

The Dance Exponents

Through the 80’s, the band released four albums and 13 singles. Their first single, in 1982, was “Victoria”:

From 1984, here’s “I'll Say Goodbye (Even Though I'm Blue)”

The Exponents

As the 80’s turned into the 90’s The Dance Exponents came back from a four year stint in the UK, and morphed into The Exponents. Another prolific decade, with five albums and 14 singles. Their 1991 album “Something beginning with C” gave us “Why Does Love Do This To Me” and “Whatever happened to Tracy” which @conradt featured in this post and also “Who Loves Who The Most”.

Since 2000, a couple of Greatest Hits albums have been released. Jordan Luck continues to perform as The Jordan Luck band. Both Jordan Luck personally, and The Exponents have been inducted into the NZ Music Hall of Fame, which I’ll talk more about at the end of the month.

Remember I mentioned that, in NZ, 6 degrees of separation is more like 2 or 3? A few (quite a few) years back, a couple of friends were performing a music show they had written, and on final night, Jordan and his wife came along. Then they stayed to party with the cast and jam with the band. Fuck, that was a good night! Best party I’d been to for ages.

Fur Patrol

After listening to some Exponents on Youtube, I felt much better. Then some Fur Patrol came up on random, so why not, let’s listen to them too. They’re a band from my home town of Wellington, active from 1996 to 2008, and fronted by Julia Deans. Their most famous song would be “Lydia”.

After that I moseyed on over to see if @conradt had posted anything new, and sure ’nuff, found some kiwi Rock. It’s a bit more recent than most of my favourites, so I found some new music that I liked a lot better than Antagonist AD. I particularly liked Elemeno P, and he also featured The Feelers, The Datsuns and Villainy.

If you prefer the oldies, remember @ravenruis has a new trip down memory lane each day.

Thanks for listening

This was another Exponent song I always loved:

I went to school with some girl who swore she was a cousin of Jordan's, but of course who knows..

2-3 degrees of separation - yeah, she probably was :-)

Furry Patrol is cute, but band are cheapskates with their instruments. :-)

Lol, good noticing.

From the sublime to the ridiculous - The Dance Exponents were awesome.

Holy cow that Antagonist A.D was some horrible crap!

This is one of my favourite Dance Exponents songs:

Yep, that was a goodie!
