Celebrating NZ music throughout May: 12 – Shona Laing / Sharon O’Neill

in #music6 years ago

Over the last couple of days I’ve been thinking about two of our female artists. They’re both singer song-writers, they were active about the same time, their names both start with S, and today is Saturday - and that’s enough reasons to feature them together today.

Shona Laing

Shona first came became known in 1972, aged 17, when she appeared in television talent show New Faces, performing her own song "1905", written about Henry Fonda.

In my mind, all of her best known hits date from around the same time. But sadly, my memory is not as good as I thought. All in all, she had over 20 singles and 7 albums between 1973 and 1994, but the only other two I remember were from 1987, fifteen years after she released 1905. Here’s “(Glad I’m) Not A Kennedy”.

From the same album, “South”, here’s “Soviet Snow”. As you can see, she wasn’t afraid to sing about topical issues.

Sharon O’Neill

Sharon also featured on New Faces in 1972 with a song of her own, "Nothing Makes It Easy", and made it to the finals. For the next few years, she was in a few different bands, and started focusing more on song writing.

In 1978, she came 3rd in another TV show, The Entertainers, and released her first single "Luck's on Your Table", which was to be on her first album “This Heart This Song”, released in 1979.

She released another five albums between 1980 and 1990, and, like Shona, had more than 20 singles. Here’s Asian Paradise from 1981.

Also from 1981 was “Maybe”

In her career, she has written songs for movies and TV shows, collaborated with other singers, and toured into this century. In 2014, a greatest hits was released. Her most well known song was possibly Maxine, from the 1983 album Foreign Affairs, which told the life of a Kings Cross prostitute.
