Grapthar's Song of the Day: The Vandals 'Working for the Man'
The Vandals - Working for the Man
The Vandals are legends of the punk
world. They actually begin in the early '80s, with their current bassist Joey Escalante on drums, and were known for their humorous, tongue-in-cheek punk tunes. Over time, the lineup changed, and by the late '80s, they had their final form: Escalante on bass, Josh Freese on drums, Dave Quackenbush singing, and Warren A. Fitzgerald on guitar. All of the musicians are incredible, with Freese and Fitzgerald having careers as successful studio and touring musicians.
Listen to Working for the Man by The Vandals here.
This song is a B-side
from their 1990 album Fear of a Punk Planet. The lyrics are silly, as per their M.O., sung from the perspective of a disgruntled Chevrolet factory worker who decides to rise up and fight the man. However, the music is what I really dig here. I love the rhythmic pattern of the Verse, where they chop off a beat from every 2nd measure, except the 4th time around where they play it through the 4 full beats. The guitar overdubs are awesome too, super manic and crazy, like Fitzgerald himself.
