Grapthar's Song of the Day: White Lies 'Tokyo'
White Lies - Tokyo
White Lies are a band
I only discovered about a year ago, via a friend of mine on Facebook who is heavily into post-punk/goth/‘80s underground music, so I knew I needed to check them out. They’re labeled as a ‘post-punk’ band, though I guess post-punk revival might be more appropriate, as they’re a modern group. They were formed in 2007 by Harry McVeigh, Jack Lawrence-Brown, and Charles Cave, though they bring in two more musicians for live performances and touring. They are clearly influenced by the late’70s/‘80s post-punk and goth bands, though they still have a sound that is unique to them, as they have thirty years of influences over those original acts.
Listen to Tokyo by White Lies here.
This song is from their
newest album, FIVE (the album cover uses the Braille for five), released in February of this year. The production on this song, and album, is great, and sounds so big and intense. The use of retro-synth sounds along with modern guitar tones work perfectly here, and gives the song a surprisingly heavy vibe, particularly in the Choruses, while the vocals provide a catchy, sing along element on top. This song is one of the two singles from the album, and was clearly a great choice, as it's a bit of an ear-worm, so you've been warned.
