Vocalese is the ninth album recorded by The Manhattan Transfer and the most acclaimed by critics, to the point of being nominated for twelve Grammy Awards and winning three of them: two for the Best Jazz Vocal Performance and one for the Best Vocal Arrangement. In it they demonstrate their absolute mastery of their art and their refined technique.

Until then, all their albums showed great diversity and covered a wide variety of music, including jazz. But this one is different, since it’s dedicated to the vocalese of the great Jon Hendricks, author of all the lyrics. Vocalese is a way of singing in which lyrics are written for instrumental jazz themes. By adding words to them, their discourse change and take on a new dimension. This singing is usually very fast, but nevertheless pleasant to listen to.

Killer Joe is a very bad cat, of those who make a dead man cry. So be careful with him! He is fast and handsome, and his love for gold has made him very cold. When I arrived to the big city he dazzled me with a nice talk, but everything was about money. Every woman he knows is like an account set on a string, as if he were wearing a necklace.
