Welcome!
It is that time again where music is what is on the menu, and of cause, you trust my dishes, I have not let you down. Maybe you have been bullied by the series of discussions we have had on common terminologies and/or languages associated with music, I have great news, we are done with that(this is not to downplay its importance in anyway), but to heighten your curiosity on what is coming next.
So as we aim to develope or understand music, we shall today consider NOTES as it applies to music, lets get right to it then:
Notes are signs or symbols in sheet music represented by their different shapes, they indicate the duration or length of sounds. The term NOTE can imply different meanings even in music depending on the context it is used in, therefore in the context we tend to explore, we mean NOTES in terms of VALUE and/or DURATION. Hence, we shall consider eight kinds of notes commonly in use:

BREVE OR DOUBLE WHOLE NOTE
This is a note lasting two times as long as a whole note (or semibreve). it is equivalent to eight beats or two bars(if the time signature is common time). It is represented by the symbol below with a hollow oval head and two parallel lines on each sides adjacent to the note head:

SEMIBREVE OR WHOLE NOTE
The semibreve is a note equivalent to four beats or a bar, other notes are a fraction of the whole note. The whole note is a hollow oval note head represented below:

MINIM OR HALF NOTE
The minim is a hollow oval note head as well, but with a stem, it is equivalent to two beats or half of the whole note, this means that two half notes make a whole note(of cause, even mathematics says so). The note is represented below:

CROTCHET OR QUARTER NOTES
The crotchet notated with a filled-in or blocked oval note head and a straight stem, it is often equivalent to one beat, this means two quarter notes make a half note. Its representation is shown below:

QUAVER OR EIGHT NOTE
This is a blocked or filled-in note head with a stem an a single flag above the stem. It equivalent to half a beat(kind of sound tricky if you are new to this), two quavers make a crotchet. This is represented below:

SEMIQUAVER OR SIXTEENTH NOTE
This is just like the quaver or the eight note, but the striking difference is that the semiquaver has a double flag above its stem. This is equal to a quarter beat(now sounds even crazier), two sixteenth note make a quaver, an four of it makes two quavers or one Crotchet. Here is its symbol:

DEMISEMIQUAVER OR THIRTY-SECOND NOTE
Just like the last two notes, the demisemiquaver has a triple flag representation above the stem. Its representation is illustrated below:

HEMIDEMISEMIQUAVER OR SIXTY-FOURTH NOTE
Yes your guess is as good as what I know, or what is correct. This note resembles the order of quavers, its striking difference is that it has four flags. This is its representation:

This is about it, there or variations of notes, we shall consider the principle behind this variations and also apply them to the notes we have thus studied, but for now, chew on this menu of note to obtain understanding.
