Snarky Puppy, Lalah Hathaway and the Desiderata

in #music7 years ago

The Desiderata was written in 1927 by American poet, Max Ehrmann. It contains a lot of easily digestible philosophical truths but the one that stands out in this case is this:

“Always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself…”

Making music can be an extremely rewarding and humbling experience. You might have a knack for one aspect of it and be completely inept at something else. I was born with pretty good relative pitch but almost no rhythm (how’s that for stereotypes). And then there are people out there who can sing chords. If you’ve never seen this video before, there’s a moment when you can tell every musician in the room gets chills. I’d recommend you watch the whole thing but it happens somewhere between 6:14 and 6:27…

If you’re not impressed, I dare you to try it. But the bigger point is this; The full extent of what we’re capable of may not be best expressed through comparison with others. There’s no point to becoming bitter about the inability to sing chords or becoming vain about having better pitch than William Hung. We’ve all got ‘something’ and the best way to use it is to USE it.
