Joy is the second of three albums from Ultra Vivid Scene, which is actually Kurt Ralske and a bunch of side musicians. Joy is a nice set of songs, led by "Staring At The Sun" and "It Happens Every Time", both of which were moderately successful singles. "Special One", which features Kim Deal, is a blatant Big Star ripoff. It gets a little snoozy at times, due in large part to Ralske's vocal delivery, which is more Lou Reed than anything else. Ralske didn't tour much, which may be why UVS slipped through the cracks and is now forgotten. But Joy, their best album, is well worth a listen. Very refreshing stuff.
Ralske ended the band in 1993 and did some solo work, but hasn't been heard from musically since 2001. He's concentrating on visual art these days, and no plans for reviving the UVS name have been heard.
This is album #131 in an ongoing series.
