From Sepultura to Ed Sheeran - A Musical journey through my early teens and twenties (Part 1)

in #music7 years ago (edited)

Talking to @JPederson96 in the super secret discord server (even more exclusive than secret slack) and the topic of Emo music came up. I expressed distaste at first, but then realised there was actually a few Emo and Hardcore songs I had a soft spot for. This got me thinking about how diverse my musical tastes actually are and how many different musical styles and scenes I've got involved in over the years, inspiring me to take a journey through my musical past. Shout out to the homie dimzy for being my muse on this one.

I was originally going to do this as one single post, but it's going to be too damn big and I'd really like if people actually had a listen to the songs, so I'm going to break it up into a series.

12 and 13: Eminem and Heavy Metal

Like most white kids growing up in suburbia at the turn of the millenium, I had a massive hard on for Eminem. The guy was actually pretty good back then - not quite sure what happened. This was one of his first joints I really enjoyed and think it still stands up: vinyl crackling, crunchy drums - this was straight up hip hop, not that comedic pop stuff he got into later:

This was also about the time Dre's Chronic 2001 dropped and I definitely banged a lot of that, as well as the D12 album Devil's Night. I don't want to get too bogged down in hip hop right now though, as this music became a huge part of my life later down the track and still is to this day.

Other than that, I played a whole lot of Metal - not straight up Death Metal, but the sort of stuff goths and elitist metal-heads look down on - Slipknot, Mudvayne and Sepultura's later stuff. Even though everyone hated it and it was widely touted as their worst album, I loved Sepultura's Nation:

Mudvayne's Severed from the LD.50 album was also a favourite, I was listening to this song earlier and again now and still really like it 16 years later. I love the contrast between the growling and singing (I guess this is what the goths hated?) and he even breaks into a sort of rap style at 2:03. As soon as I hear the intro riff to this I experience a wave of pure nostalgia and when the heavy guitars come in, I start gently head banging (more of an autistic rock XD):

As far as Slipknot goes, Wait and Bleed is probably one of my favourite songs, though I actually didn't hear this til later on - when I was 13 it was all about their second album IOWA. The little old lady who used to own the indoor skatepark used to bang this on a Friday night. I remember getting amped to this and busting massive indy airs over the fun box - damn son - what a rush! Here's People = Shit:

14 and 15: Tupac and West Coast Rap/G-Funk

Even though Tupac Shakur had been dead for sometime, he was HUGE at my school and the posthumous album Better Days dropped when I was in year 8. No one in my area played New York Boom Bap (more on that later), only those "queer cunts" one post code over played that shit - round my area it was all about that west coast G-Funk. Hit 'Em Up pretty much sums up the local vibe - this is why I never heard Biggie til later on - why would I listen to Biggie when Pac utterly destroyed him on this joint and I quote "fucked his bitch"?

This was one that would be played at every party - guaranteed: 2Pac and Dre's California Love. Even though it's rather light on the G-Funk whistle, this is what springs to mind when I think about west coast rap. In fact, when I mentioned to my fam the other day that I wanted to take a trip to LA and they asked why, I just put this song on:

Another absolute classic: Snoop Dog 's Gin and Juice. Whether you're sipping on gin and juice, or chilling with a beer and blunt, this track is the absolute shiznit - and they really pump that g-funk whistle!

We're already up to 7 songs and I actually want people to listen to each joint so I'm going to leave it there. Keep an eye and ear out for the next post in the series, where I'll cover the rest of my 14th and 15th years; my brief foray into Punk music and the start of my love affair with underground rave music: Happy Hardcore, Hardcore and Trance.

If you managed to listen to all these songs and enjoyed this post, please leave a comment below - I'd love to hear from you!

Yeaaaaa man, hell yea... Literally all I grew up on. Em, 2pac, Dre, Snoop, lol. I was into the whole death row label, had a crazy stable back then. Brought me back to some good times my man, can't wait to see pt. 2!

Hahaha thanks dude, I wasn't sure what you came up on. These days I'd rate east coast stuff heads above.

Sick music selections , but what really cuaght my eye was "I remember getting amped to this and busting massive indy airs over the fun box " . Over the past few weeks myself and a few other skater have begun to populate the once dire tag of Skateboarding and skate with quality posts. There is also a contest tag under steemskate if you got time check it out . Otherwise rad article and I hope you can still bust indys.

Hahaha sadly I can't, that skatepark was sold when I was about 15 and turned into a theatre. It was a great park, all the ramps were wooden ones that we could drag around as we pleased and the curved kickers were just perfect - little pump and half an olly and you'd soar. The last time I indied out of anything was a concrete quarter about 12 years ago, ended up snapping my wrist at the same park a week later and it also snapped my confidence - have been a pussy on a board ever since!

I bought a deck last year for the first time in ages, took it to the local park literally twice, tried to slide this little down rail endlessly and bloody snapped it - too damn fat now!

Ah man that sux good thing you tried , im sure you got a little something left in the tank . If not you can live viceriously through the posts , in one of my recent posts it shows us group of old dudes skating . One of the dudes is in his late 40's just got back into skating and is now getting everything back. I think its always best when getting back into to it to just chill and enjoy riding , if you try something to gnarly your confidence is not there and you bail and slam hard. Regardless keep up the rad crypto posts I always enjoy reading them .

Thanks dude much appreciated. Yeah I should buy another deck - it just pissed me off hahaha I remember they used to last me like at least 6 months unless I was really unlucky. I used to skate 775s and tried that again, might need something wider cos I'm like 85KG now vs 60 back then.

Re: Old dudes skating - there used to be a couple old surfy blokes at our park who were total rippers. We had this ramp that morphed straight into the wall and matey used to roar like ten metres up the wall and drop back into it, sooooo gnarly.

I have been calling dudes out on the skateboarding and steemskate hastag in terms of tricks but as of now I am calling you out on getting a board. Getting a board and getting back into it is so much fun just dont try ride like your 18 and stoned again hahaha.I ride a 8.25 at the moment and it is awesome definatley better going wider those days of the 90's small boards big pants and lightening metabolism are over.

Awwwww shiiiiiit ... I'm a sucker for a challenge. Guess I have to. Last time someone called me out I ended up picking up the mic again for first time in years

Awesome , I am happy to get anyone back on the board

Sepultura's early stuff is where it's at...Dead Embryonic Cells...Arise...Desperate Cry...and the remake of Orgasmatron!

I think because Nation was the first thing I heard and it was so different to their earlier stuff, I found the earlier stuff harder to get into - I remember buying Chaos AD after I bought Nation and really not feeling it!

Just the opposite here...I bought Beneath The Remains when it first came out and loved everything up to Chaos AD...which is when they ventured off the beaten path they had been on :)

Wow we practically share the same likes in music bro. Even though I'm more into the earlier stuff by Sepultura but other than that everything else you mentioned it's what I like. I still consider Eminem one of the best rappers of all time.

Haha nice! I could never get into Sepultura's earlier stuff, think because Nation was the first thing I heard. I really don't rate Eminem any more, he hasn't made something I'd rate pretty much since back then. Can't argue with the guy's technical ability though, it's just the beats and songs, the finished products I really struggle with.

Oh I really love the song Gin and Juice!!! Absolutely my favorite one on this list! But you're right, I'm wondering too what happened to Eminem! I hope we'll find out one day and don't have to start believing all the conspiracy theories out there! :)

lol I haven't heard the conspiracy theories - care to share?

See my reply to @vivekacharya :)

Eminam is the best rapper in the world with his unique voice and style. Ive enjoyed his every song. His rap god snoop dog , I'm not afraid every song is an epic.

He is a great technical rapper, but he's far from the best IMO - especially not these days. Kendrick, Joyner Lucas, Hopsin, Jay Cole ... there is a ton of guys out here killing it.

Eminen..my man

ahaaaa very interesting. I will just that Old is Always Gold Sir. love it. <3 <3

The first person whose song i start listing is eminem. Now i hear it from lot of my friends that his songs energetic which gives you ray of hope. I like they way he sing. Fastest rapper of the world.

Is he still the fastest rapper? I swear someone else took the crown - that changes all the time. I did really like that joint where he took it though - that was straight up hip hop, he hadn't done anything like that in ages!

He is still the fastest rapper in his genre. Hip hop is another genre. I like 2pac and Snoop Dog too. all are good best in their genre @bulleth

Hip Hop and Rap are the same genre overall, though Hip Hop does have connotations of purism - sampled beats rather than synths, scratching in the choruses etc
