Louie Shelton in the clip above was completely self taught, and as he said, mastering guitar came naturally to him. There are countless other examples.
The distinction I would make is that people who have a natural gift, recognize it and practice diligently are much more likely to become a great musician than someone who lacks a natural gift for music.
