Day 20: A Song that has many meanings to me

Skunk Anansie: Hedonism

So many ways to interpret this song, from the obvious to the subtle. Every line can be read in different ways, including some the writer, Skin, may not have intended.

It is clearly about a past lover of some kind, but other than that it seems open to multiple interpretation.

"Just because you feel good
doesn't make you right"

Is Skin saying here that the lover acts selfishly according to what makes them feel good, regardless if it hurts others? Or is she saying the lover feels good to her, but that doesn't make them right for her? If the former the selfish acts could range from rape and abuse through to a level of irresponsibility and implusiveness.

"Just because you feel good
Still want you here tonight, want you"

On the surface implies the lover felt good to her, so she still wants them. But it could hold a darker meaning. It could be the POV of being trapped in a cycle of abuse, addicted to the times when the relationship is pleasurable, putting up with the pain as a price to pay. Or even darker, she could want them there to enact revenge, because they feel good, when she doesn't feel they deserve to.

All the other lyrics have similar ambiguity. I won't explain all the layers, but they are there if you look for them.

On top of this the song has personal meaning to me in that it reminds me of friends from my late teenage years that I have long since lost contact with.
